"We hired Antonio about 2 years ago. His work was fine, but he was inconsistent in his communication, and unreliable about showing up when he said he would. He also refused to out us on a regular schedule, and instructed us to just call him, but then he did not return calls. We ended up hiring another company. This morning he was doing work for a neighbor at 7:30 a.m., and blocking our shared 1-lane road. I asked if he could pull his truck over so I could pass, and he was rude and dismissive. My husband came out and Antonio (the owner) became aggressive with him and screamed â  just go around!â  (There absolutely was not room). This person is unprofessIonal, rude, and aggressive."

These may include filling in a gravel driveway, building a patio, constructing a fire pit area , planning a garden walkway, or using stone instead of mulch in your flower beds.

You shouldn’t put topsoil over new grass seed. Even though it may seem like this would increase soil contact and help the seeds grow, adding more soil overtop of planted grass seed will only make it harder for water and oxygen to reach the grass seeds. If you want to protect the grass seeds, consider adding a thin layer of organic matter, such as straw or hay.

In most cases, it’s better to remove rocks before adding mulch. Layering the two will restrict drainage and plant health, and can create an unpleasant texture underfoot.

If you like the look of mulch in your plant beds, be aware that it can attract a variety of pests, including termites. To avoid wood-to-foundation contact, leave a one-foot barrier around your house and fill it in with rocks or gravel, starting mulch past that barrier and working it outward into your plant beds. 

A light layer of mulch can help protect a tree, retain moisture, and keep the soil healthy. However, it’s important to avoid over-mulching or piling the mulch up around the trunk of a tree, a practice notoriously called “volcano mulching.” That piled mulch can increase the chances of rot and disease on the tree trunk as well as overwhelming the soil, which needs access to a certain amount of air. Topped trees have it hard enough: mulch sparingly while they heal.
