I came across Mark Michaels and Great Designs by doing a Google search for Stony Brook Architects.  I viewed his web site and looked at the work he had done for other clients.. I was impressed so I contacted him via email with my details and received a phone call back from him later that same day.  We discussed how my wife and I had recently purchased this house and wanted to make some changes to it.  The house is on a nice parcel of land with a water views and beautiful sunsets, however it is quite unique and a bit eclectic.   The house also posed zoning difficulties as it is situated against the back of an oddly shaped lot.  Our objective was to add a first floor master bedroom and bath without losing any of the existing water views.

My wife and I met with Mark and showed him the house.  He shared his initial thoughts and observations and we agreed to take the next step.  Mark prepared a proposal for his services which we thought were quite reasonable.  We agreed to move forward. 

Mark made several visits to the house, took measurements and made notes.  He even video taped the house.  The house has two levels but the layout is one of a kind.  There are many nooks, odd shaped rooms and changing elevations.  Mark took all this information and somehow entered it perfectly into his architectural software.  He then used these tools to illustrate how the planned addition would look and its impact on the entire home.  We were able to do a virtual tour of the inside and outside of the proposed structure.  We quickly became comfortable with the design and moved to the next stage.

Mark prepared extensive building documents which we used to get contractor bids.  I also was able to walk into the building department and leave with a building permit on the first visit.  We hired a contractor and the project progressed smoothly.  Mark made frequent visits to the site and really took ownership of his work.  Several of the tradesmen commented to me how impressed they were with his passion for the project, his attention to detail and the integrity of his design.   

Well, as of this writing the project is well on its way to completion.  It has been a positive experience. My wife and I highly recommend you give Great Designs a look.

"Everything went smoothly. Bathroom & Kitchen King finished the project within the estimated time frame and contracted budget. Vincent and Harry were very responsive and kept me informed. When Harry came to do the estimate, he left me with some contacts at vendors he works with so I could get an idea of the products available to me. They worked efficiently and cleaned up at the end of each day (I realize this benefitted them as well, but it was nice to not have to work around in-progress in a gutted kitchen for several weeks). "We had known about this problem for some time and had also had a structural engineer evaluate our situation.  We may be putting our house up for sale soon and decided it was finally time to get the wall fixed.  Armed with my own research and the engineers evaluation, we searched for a contractor to perform the work we knew we needed to have done.  Upon contacting Foundation Experts, Larry got back to me very quickly and we set up an appointment for him to inspect the wall.  He was VERY thorough in explaining what needed to be done to stabilize the wall to prevent any further movement/damage.  He said we should have the wall "pinned".  He quoted us $4000 to do the whole job (10 pins along a roughly 25ft. long wall).  They also designed the system so that the re-bar would pass through the top course of block and attach to the house sill plate above the wall to help lock it in place.  
The price was on par with most other estimates (slightly cheaper actually), but we decided to go with Foundation Experts mostly because they were very thorough with their evaluation, were honest (I was armed with a lot of info about our situation and felt very confident that what he proposed to do was exactly what needed to be done) and they did not pressure us at all.  I also really liked the fact that they routinely work with engineers and felt that they had a better grasp on executing the work over other contractors we contacted.  They also will work with the township if permits are needed.
We scheduled for the work to start the following week.  Their team took about 2 days to do the work.  They were very professional and did not make a mess at all.  They put plastic up to prevent concrete dust from getting everywhere in the basement and cleaned up thoroughly.  Larry was present during the bulk of the work and made sure that everything went smoothly.  They even worked with us on the payment method.  He made it very clear if we have any issues/concerns or questions to call them anytime.  He also stressed that if we sell the house and potential buyers have any questions/concerns to contact him and they will work with us as best they can.  
The wall is now fixed and my wife and I feel better knowing that our wall won't come crashing down during then next heavy rain!  We also feel better knowing that we won't have to worry about foundation issues coming up if/when we sell our house.  All in all, it was a great experience!
