"We hired Ken of North Crest LLC to upgrade our electrical panel and install a new outlet. In the process, he discovered that we still had some dangerous old knob-and-tube wiring. So he checked and replaced multiple outlets, rewired a ceiling fan, and installed 2 replacement light fixtures. Thank you so much, Ken, for making our old house safer! It is unlikely that a ceiling fan will fall, even if it develops a wobble. During a proper installation, ceiling fans are securely bolted to a ceiling joist, and the fasteners used for mounting are generally separate from the components related to balancing. A wobble is typically caused by an imbalance, which can be annoying and may lead to other issues, but is not usually dangerous on its own.

However, if a fan is wobbling because it was not installed correctly, it could be at risk of falling. For safety, it's always a good idea to ensure all mounting screws are tight and to address any wobbling or imbalance issues promptly.

A tripped circuit breaker, broken pull chain, faulty wiring, or a bad motor or capacitor are all common causes for a fan to stop working.

Most people describe the sound of an unbalanced ceiling fan as a buzzing or grinding noise. This is caused by the parts of the fan rubbing or rattling against each other as the blades spin. However, a wobbling fan can also make squeaking, rattling, or thumping sounds, depending on the severity of the balance issue.

Fan power is measured by CFM, or cubic feet per minute. For every 1,000 feet of square footage in your attic, you need a minimum of 700 CFM. Steeper roofs may need larger fans or about 840 CFM.  You can figure the size of attic fan you need by multiplying the square footage of your attic floor by 0.7. (multiply by 1.2 for a steep roof and 1.15 for a dark roof). That number is the CFM required for your fan to run efficiently.

There are many signs of a bad AC fan motor, including if the fan blades don’t spin when the AC kicks on or if they keep spinning when the AC is off. The AC fan cools down the condenser coil, so a faulty motor can also cause the system to overheat. Unusual noises in the exterior AC unit, including grinding or rattling sounds, may also be a sign that the AC fan motor is worn out.
