"Harry helped identify suppliers for tile and fixtures and helped guide our design process. Once parts arrives, work began fairly quickly. The shower is gorgeous. His tile installer is an artist. The rest of the bathroom looks great too. Harry was usually great about calling me back or texting back quickly."

"Frank Maniscalco did a beautiful quality job installing a porcelain tile floor in my daughterâ s basement living room. He gave us great advice about where to get the best deal on porcelain tiles and what color grout to purchase. He gave us details on how to protect the floor and when it could be actively used. He and Ken worked very hard to complete the project on time, and even agreed to do a job to repair a sliding door that was getting in the way of the new floor threshold. Frank and Ken are very outgoing and friendly, and it was a pleasure having them work for us. I intend to recommend Frank to anyone interested in installing tile floors. I give him the highest possible recommendation. 5+!"

Backsplash Installation questions, answered by experts

No, painting shower tile doesn’t last and is better reserved as a temporary solution to refreshing the look of old tiles. Shower tile paint may last around one to five years, depending on how well you prep the surface before painting, the type of paint you use, the type of tile in your shower, and how often you use the shower.

Your floors should be completely level for tile, otherwise you risk damaging the tiles in the future. When there are even small gaps or hills in the subfloor beneath the tile, this puts more pressure on the tile when you walk around on the floor. With repeated traffic, the tiles are at risk of cracking, and you’ll have to deal with tile repairs sooner than if the floor was completely level.

No, when done correctly, removing the tile shouldn’t damage the subfloor. However, if there was pre-existing damage to the subfloor from standard use or lack of maintenance, the subfloor may need repairs. For example, if the contractors notice mold growth on the subfloor or an uneven surface, you may need more extensive services before installing new tile.

If you DIY tile removal, remove the tiles one step at a time, individually removing the tile, grout, and mortar to prevent unnecessarily damaging the subfloor. Depending on the age of your home, consider having a professional inspect the subfloor to ensure it’s in good enough condition to lay new tile.

Thinset mortar is the best adhesive for ceramic tiles on concrete. It is easy to work with and has a slower dry time than mastic or epoxy mortars. This longer dry time gives the installer more time to adjust tiles, which is especially useful for DIYers who may not have tile installation experience. It can also be built up to help level any depressions or gaps in the concrete subfloor.

When considering the types of grout for your project, unsanded grout is the best choice for penny tile. Unsanded grout can fit better into narrow spaces, like those between the small penny tiles, and it’s easier to smooth out for a seamless finish. However, if you’re unsure, check with a tile installation pro to determine which grout is best for your specific project.
