"This was my first time using Angie's list and I was very pleased with the service of Big B. He called me back immediately to look at the job and provided me with a quote. His crew arrived for the job on time and immediately started to work. His crew was very professional and was not disruptive in my home. They also answered questions I had. I asked them about another job and they told me how to do it myself- I appreciated this information. I was pleased with the sheet rock and painting job done- I plan to use them again. I would recommend them to others."

Awnings FAQs, answered by experts

Awnings are either fixed or retractable and can be paired with a variety of cover materials. Fixed awnings are a permanent outdoor feature of a building. These are highly durable and require ongoing maintenance. Once installed, the position of this awning cannot be changed.

Retractable awnings are more popular than fixed awnings since the cover can open and close. This allows homeowners to open and close the awning, depending on the weather. When not in use, it can be closed to allow for extra space.

Yes, you can replace just the fabric on an awning without having to replace the entire awning frame and hardware. This process will take a professional about one to two hours. If you want to DIY, it could take longer, especially for large or retractable awnings. Replacing the fabric on an awning can improve the look of your home and help naturally cool your interior and exterior spaces.

It depends on how you’ll use it. Both awnings and pergolas create shelter in outdoor areas, but pergolas have grid-style roofs, which are more open than awnings and not as effective at blocking out UV rays and precipitation. Also, pergolas are permanent structures, so you can’t put them away when you aren’t using them (unlike retractable awnings).

Metal awnings last much longer than fabric thanks to their durability and resistance to fading, sun damage, and damage from the outside elements. They also need less maintenance than fabric options. Both items add curb appeal to your home, but you shouldn't expect either type of awning to add property value to your home.

If you're handy, it might be worth trying to install retractable awnings yourself. Just keep in mind that motorized retractable awnings require much more know-how, and the risk of something costly going wrong (such as damaging your new awnings) is higher.

Mechanical awnings should be easy to install for the average person with some handyman skills.
