"Ryan is great young hardworking guy, he understands the requirement and made a nice pavers patio and asphalt driveway, we liked it. He has completed big project on time. The driveway could be little better but overall good job. He has promised 5 years warranty plus helping out with sealing the driveway next year as courtesy."

"I can’t say enough good words about D&S Landscaping. They completely transformed our backyard into an additional living space for our home, and changed the way we use and enjoy our property. The design was perfect, the landscaping was beautifully executed, and the paving stones added such a high-end feel. The lighting they installed brings everything to life at night — it’s stunning and makes us want to spend all our extra time outside. The quality of their work is top-level, and the team was professional, reliable, and incredibly skilled from start to finish. "They installed a patio in my backyard with Cambridge pavers which turned out absolutely beautiful. The design and pattern is just outstanding. They also put a belgium block border on both sides of my driveway on a 35 degree angle which added the final touch to the Cambridge paver driveway that Classical pavers did a few years ago. The crew that did this project and my driveway are very professional and polite. I have recommended Classical Pavers to many family and friends. The owner is very honest and a pleasure to deal with from start to finish. They are the best around without a doubt."

Small jobs welcome

"I had an excellent experience with Jason's Masonry, who recently installed a new paver driveway and walkway to replace our old asphalt and concrete. Jason provided detailed information about the work and the steps involved in the process. His crew was very detail-oriented, making precise cuts and offering great advice on the aesthetics of the project. I would definitely recommend Jason's Masonry for any concrete or paver work."

Asphalt Driveways questions, answered by experts

Three inches is a great thickness for a residential asphalt driveway that sees minimal to moderate traffic from cars, SUVs, and pickup trucks. However, a thicker driveway can better withstand the weight of a heavier vehicle, such as a trailer or a recreational vehicle. If you drive a heavy vehicle on a thin driveway, you risk cracking and damaging it.

Regular cleaning, sealing, and timely repair of cracks help maintain its condition.

A solid driveway starts with the right asphalt mix, and for most homes, dense-graded hot mix asphalt (HMA) is the most recommended. It’s both durable and flexible, making it a reliable choice for residential use. A properly compacted 2-3 inch layer on a well-prepared crushed stone base will hold up for years. In areas with harsh winters or scorching summers, a slightly modified mix can help prevent cracking and rutting. No matter the climate, quality installation is just as important as the material itself, so hiring an experienced contractor ensures a smooth, long-lasting driveway built to last.

A driveway's lifespan varies by material. Asphalt driveways typically last 15 to 30 years, while concrete driveways last longer, between 20 and 50 years. The longevity of any driveway is affected by factors like extreme temperatures, heavy traffic, and the quality of maintenance. Regular upkeep, such as filling cracks, resealing the surface, and ensuring proper drainage, can help extend its life. For gravel driveways, regrading to fill in uneven areas every year or two is recommended.

Several materials are suitable for steep driveways. Gravel and crushed stone are affordable options that provide good traction. Permeable pavers—such as plastic, rubber, or concrete—filled with gravel or crushed stones are also excellent, as they allow water to drain without causing erosion and perform well in ice and snow. Another option is resin, which can be coated with an anti-slip finish and helps prevent puddles. For added stability, you can install a retaining wall to prevent pavers and gravel from shifting over time.
