"We would definitely use Jewel Coats again for any painting needs! Robert and his electrician were better than we ever expected! We were blown away with Robert's skill, attention to detail, professionalism and kindness. He provided great advice on how to best provide accents that complemented the base color of our basement. The team easily adapts to and overcomes any challenges that pop up along the way such as installing matching light switches. We are very particular when it comes to our home and Jewel Coats surpassed even our expectations! It is no wonder why they have a five-star rating. They earned every one of them! Jewel Coats and especially Robert are the best! Randy and Donna"

"Great experience! That 1 Painter North Jersey painted the outside of our house a few months ago and we’re still receiving compliments. We filled out a form online and they came out the next day to give us an estimate. Super easy to work with and great final product!"

"Nick gave us a reasonable estimate and a good warranty(5 years) on their work. We had to wait awhile because of continual rain, but then they were here when things dried up. Julio (I hope I'm spelling that right) and his workers were unrelenting during their hours and days here. Their stamina and professional attitude and quality craftsmanship was refreshing. The house was carefully covered, taped and sprayed. That was the quick and relatively easy part. The difficult, labor intensive part was the deck and associated lattice work which was done in a very detailed manner. They left the house and grounds clean and neat. I am a very demanding homeowner and I found nothing wrong with their work and can only give them praise. Bravo!

"Overall a very good experience with Joe. High level of customer service - very responsive and good communicator. What was also important was that we had an electrician doing work at the same time and Joe worked harminously with him. Very accurate with the execution. The job (painting a whole apartment) took longer than expected but that's because Joe had much more patch work filling holes/ preparing walls. Joe took great care touching up the apartment to finish off the job. We spoke after everyday - he wanted to ensure that we were happy with the progress. Reasonable value - Joe's quote was very competitive but the differentiator was he used higher quality paints and would do 3 coats in some areas to get the finish he wanted. The apartment looks fantastic - thank you Joe."

Deck Staining questions, answered by experts

The best way to protect a deck is to prevent damage from UV light, water, mold, mildew, insects, and abrasive cleaning methods. Sweep regularly to prevent debris that hides bugs and traps moisture that can result in mold or mildew growth. Use a deck cleaner once a year to remove algae, mold, and mildew. Avoid using pressure washers on high, as they can damage the wood. Applying a deck sealant can protect the wood from UV and water damage, and adding shade can also reduce sunlight damage.

You can refresh a painted deck by either giving it a thorough cleaning or refinishing the deck altogether. Chipped or faded paint, as well as extensive damage, often calls for a new finish. To do this, remove the original coat of paint with a sander and add either a new coat of paint or a stain to protect the wood below.

Deciding whether to stain or paint a pool deck depends on your budget, desired look, and the deck's material. Both options can work. Paint offers a wider variety of color options, provides excellent water resistance, and can last longer. However, it requires a primer and can eventually fade or peel. Stain is often cheaper, easier to apply, and penetrates the wood for a more natural look and longer-lasting finish. It also has great water resistance. The downsides are fewer color options and the need for a sealant. The choice can also depend on the deck material; for example, staining may be a better option for concrete as it bonds well and lasts longer than paint.

In most cases, sanding an old deck before staining it is necessary to achieve a decent finish. If your old deck has a relatively new stain finish on it and you're only doing touch-ups, you can generally skip the sanding part. However, if your goal is to make the deck look and function better, sanding first is a must.

Your tool of choice ultimately comes down to personal preference. Many DIYers prefer applying stain with a lint-free rag, but others stick with a paint brush or a roller. Wipe the stain and work it into the wood, working with and against the grain. If you’re applying multiple coats, allow the stain to dry for around four hours between coats.
