Small jobs welcome

"I was so impressed with the quality of Mr. Valle’s work that we asked him to come back! Mr. Valle was a pleasure to work with. When he showed up on the first day, his attention to all the small details was surprising to say the least. His work materials were well-organized, and his work left no mess for us to clean up afterwards, unlike many other contractors. The finished product is outstanding. I plan on having him continue to assist us with our old home soon. Overall, you will not be sorry you hired Mr. Valle. His Angi’s listing sells himself short as he is so much more than a Painter. We had him recreate an antique window casing from scraps of mouldings we had salvaged from other areas of our home. The finished product is outstanding and looks original in every detail. He is genuinely a Craftsman in every sense of the word. You will not be sorry you hired Mr. Valle! I will share his name and number far and wide, as workmen like this are rare these days."

"Mark and his team were extremely professional and responsive. I don't know about others, but I have had a difficult time finding a responsive and engaged contractor for these types of jobs. Mark returned my call, was always punctual and communicative. The workmanship was excellent. He was onsite for the majority of the work. His team was respectful and did a great job! When they left, there was no clean up necessary."

Deck Staining questions, answered by experts

Applying a sealer or topcoat after staining wood is highly recommended, though not always strictly required. A sealer protects the wood from moisture, UV rays, and weather-related issues, which is especially important for outdoor surfaces like decks and fences. It also enhances the stain's durability, prevents fading over time, and gives the wood a cleaner, more professional-looking finish. For some indoor applications, a sealer may not be necessary, depending on the type of stain used and the level of protection needed. It's always best to check the stain manufacturer's recommendations and consider the wood's intended use and exposure when deciding whether to apply a sealer.

Yes, it's a good idea to sand the wall with fine-grit sandpaper after spackling, especially if you plan on painting. You can do this by hand or using a sander, but the idea is to ensure the spackle is flush with the wall. Sanding will give your wall a smooth, uniform finish and help your paint and wallpaper stay put.

Hot, intense sunshine can cause your stain to dry too quickly, which could lead it to look uneven or patchy. If you’re staining the deck during hotter months, it’s best to do it in the morning or evening once the wood has had time to cool down. If you’re staining in cooler weather with less sunshine, the time of day won’t make as much of a difference.

Staining or sealing a cedar deck or fence is highly recommended to extend its lifespan and protect it from the elements. While cedar is naturally resistant to mold and mildew, it is not impervious to damage from moisture, sun exposure, splintering, fading, and rot over time. Applying a protective finish creates a shield that preserves the wood's strength and appearance, potentially extending its life by five to 10 years.

When choosing a finish, it's helpful to understand the difference between a sealer and a stain. A sealer sits on top of the wood, whereas a combination stain and sealer soaks into the top layer. Because it penetrates the wood, a stain generally offers better protection against UV damage and rot and lasts significantly longer. For the best results that also preserve the wood's natural color, consider using a near-translucent stain.

To maintain protection, plan on reapplying the stain or sealer every two to three years, either as a DIY project or by hiring a professional.

The best way to protect a deck is to prevent damage from UV light, water, mold, mildew, insects, and abrasive cleaning methods. Sweep regularly to prevent debris that hides bugs and traps moisture that can result in mold or mildew growth. Use a deck cleaner once a year to remove algae, mold, and mildew. Avoid using pressure washers on high, as they can damage the wood. Applying a deck sealant can protect the wood from UV and water damage, and adding shade can also reduce sunlight damage.
