"Austen is a bright young man and really cares about each & every detail of the project. He installed 2 basement egress windows for us and now we have brighter & safer spaces. We could not be happier with the final product. I highly recommend anyone looking for an egress window in the tri-state area to look no further than Swain Contracting! "I needed a lot of help. Needless to say I was lucky to find Kip from Millenium on Angie's List. I really needed estimates on a variety of services, anything from insulation to a quote on a bathroom upgrade to replacing my front door! Kip arrived on time, as scheduled and was so very knowledgeable and helpful. I initially called to get a quote on a bathroom remodel, and after reviewing specs and ideas, we ended up talking about my airflow and how the AC seemed to be uneven from floor to floor. Kip took a look at each floor and provided some DIY tips that would improve airflow. I was so relieved that I finally found an honest contractor. I've waited a while to provide a review to see how efficient his suggestions were, and they worked! With Kip's help and a little of my time, I've improved my air flow tremendously, and saved so much money in the process. Millenium will be the first place that I call when I am ready to move forward with the bathroom remodel!"

"We used Serenity Estates L.L.C to install porcelain floor tiles. The Serenity Estates team did a great job. They showed up on time, worked hard, cleaned up, and completed the project as scheduled. I highly recommend them!"

"Dan was professional, patient and really looked over the job thoroughly.  His estimate was well-prepared and he took into account that I wanted to try to do some work myself to save money.  Unfortunately, I went with someone else because I had a very limited budget and the other contractor was lower in cost.  I believe working with him would have been a more positive experience though and woudl definitely call him for a future project.

"On both jobs, they were professional. Their workers cleaned up and did not leave any messes. They always arrived when they said they would. The façade work was effected by the weather and by the availability of the building inspector and Structural Engineer. They kept on schedule. The final bill matched the estimate.

Egress Windows FAQs, answered by experts

The average cost to install an egress window is approximately $3,900, with a typical range between $2,500 and $5,300, though costs can be higher. The final price is influenced by several factors, including the window's size, type, material, and glass quality. Other variables include labor costs, location, excavation needs, and whether permits or a structural engineer consultation are required. The price of the window itself often depends on the number of panes:

  • Single-pane: $100–$400

  • Double-pane: $200–$500

  • Triple-pane: $300–$800

Additional features like window wells or covers will also increase the total project cost. It is advisable to obtain multiple quotes from professionals to get a comprehensive understanding of the expenses for your specific project.

Expect excavation below grade, creating a well for access, weatherproofing, and thorough inspections during setup.

Adding windows to a house is expensive. Budget roughly $5,800 to add a single window, and double or triple that to add two or three. In some cases, adding a single window can exceed $20,000, depending on the type of exterior wall, the size of the window, the type of window, local permit costs, and other factors.

There are a range of egress window types available, including:

  • Single-hung: $100–$400

  • Double-hung: $250–$500

  • Horizontal/sliding: $150–$800

  • Casement: $200–$500

  • In-swing: $350–$700

When choosing a type of egress window, consider how you’d like to open it. For example, double-hung egress windows open from top to bottom and let plenty of fresh air in, whereas sliding windows slide open for easy access.

The entire window replacement process, from the initial consultation to the final installation, typically takes between four and 15 weeks. This timeline accounts for measuring appointments, ordering, and manufacturing. On the day of the job, the physical installation takes about 30 minutes to two hours per window. A full-house replacement can take one to three days to complete. Factors that can extend this timeline include the total number of windows, custom sizes, complex window types, second-story installations, and any necessary repairs to existing window frames or openings.
