"National Pro Waterproofing did an amazing job in our basement. Mike got us scheduled quickly, was professional and addressed any concerns I had. He showed up on time with his very experienced crew and they got the job done in one day. They worked quickly, neatly and even put up a plastic barrier to keep the dust from spreading out of the work area. They left the work area immaculate. I highly recommend National Pro Waterproofing!"

"Right before Christmas, I had called AJT for a chimney sweep and to talk through some potential concerns i had. I had other companies coming over prior to this visit to check out my chimneys and it quickly became clear that they were trying to charge me for work that wasn't needed and were clearly overpricing the work. I had the pleasure of speaking with Mike, their foreman, about my concerns i had and he was excellent. Went above and beyond to check out my chimney, take pictures, and talk me through my original concerns around waterproofing and the cracks in my chimney crown. He talked about industry trends in the chimney business and was very knowledgeable about this line of work. I've dealt with my fair share of contractors and foreman and people like Mike are hard to come by. An honest, straight shooter who will tells you like it is."

"The response to our original phone call was very quick and an explanation of the work to be done was very thorough on the first visit.  We felt very comfortable with the experience and although we had other quotes that were a little less  we felt based on the Angie’s List rating we would go with Hendrickson Excavating.   The work was scheduled very quickly and when the work was complete you would not have known a basement crack had been repaired.  Mark cleaned up the whole area making it look as if he had not been there.  When the bill arrived we were given a further discount as the extent of the work required was a little less than quoted, which we felt was excellent, because being inexperienced as we are we,  would not have known it took less to complete the job, very professional.   We fully support Hendrickson’s high rating on Angie’s List."

"Great quality work, done timely and finished completely. When Sam came to give us a quote, not only did he help design our patio he gave us recommendations for better drainage that we didnâ  t even think of. This contractor took the time to make sure the project was planned and done correctly. They are available every step of the way for any concerns, great company!"

Basement Waterproofing FAQs, answered by experts

A sewage smell in your crawl space is usually from a damaged or clogged pipe leaking sewer gasses or actual sewage underneath your home, but there are some other common causes. Moisture, from poor or damaged encapsulation or a malfunctioning sump pump, can harbor mold and bacteria, causing a musty smell. Pests can also get stuck in your crawl space and die, which causes a sewage-like odor.

The primary downside to crawl space encapsulation is the high cost, which can be several thousand dollars. Additionally, the process can make future repairs more complicated by limiting access to plumbing and electrical wiring within the crawl space. Encapsulation also requires sealing off any vents, which can be a disadvantage for home designs that benefit from the airflow they provide. It's recommended to consult with a crawl space contractor to determine if the benefits outweigh these potential drawbacks for your specific home.

While a standard gutter system is widely considered the most effective way to prevent water damage to your home's foundation, several alternatives are available. These options can be used on their own in certain climates or as supplementary protection.

Common alternatives include:

  • Rain Chains: These are decorative chains that hang from the roof's edge, guiding rainwater to the ground.

  • Drip Edges: These metal strips are installed at the edge of the roof to direct water away from the fascia. While often used with gutters, they can be paired with a ground-level solution but are typically not sufficient on their own.

  • Rain Dispersal Systems: These systems work by breaking up the heavy sheet of water flowing off the roof, dispersing it over a wider area.

  • French Drains: This ground-level system uses a perforated pipe in a gravel-filled trench to collect and redirect water runoff away from the house.

  • Drip Paths: Placed directly below the roofline, these paths made of concrete, stone, or other materials prevent soil erosion and guide water away.

It's important to note that some alternatives like rain chains and dispersal systems may not be adequate in regions with heavy rainfall because they don't divert water away from the foundation as effectively as a full gutter system. Ground-based solutions like French drains can be very effective but are often more expensive and can affect your landscaping and curb appeal. Many experts recommend installing a full gutter system for maximum protection and using alternatives as supplementary measures.

No, you don’t want your crawl space to be wet because water and even moisture in the air under your home can attract insects and rodents, decrease your indoor air quality, increase your energy bills, promote mold growth, and even lead to structural damage. If you notice any signs of water or humidity in your crawl space, you should get the issues addressed immediately by contacting a professional. They can remove moisture and will know how to waterproof your basement to prevent ongoing problems.

Yes, it is generally unhealthy and can be dangerous to live in a damp basement. The damp air can negatively affect your breathing and lungs, and the moisture promotes mold growth and pest infestations. Inhaling mold spores or waste particles from insects and rodents attracted to the moisture can be hazardous. This damp, moldy air can also circulate into your main living area. It is crucial to resolve any moisture problems and implement preventative measures before using your basement as a living space.
