"After calling StructuralMD and confirming that this service was what we needed, an appointment was quickly set up and George (Chief Engineer) showed up on time. He closely inspected the area in question and provided a great deal of detail regarding his findings. George answered every question we had and spent whatever time required to provide additional guidance, suggestions and tips. His inspection confirmed that there were no structural issues, and helped us prepare to hire a contractor to complete the (non-structural) work that we originally sought. He also urged us to contact him again to ask any other questions that might have. A professional outfit with excellent customer service!"

"After hurricane sandy in 2012 a lot of people in Brooklyn and  Long Island got flooded a lot of home owners received flood damages or  lost their property due to Hurricane Sandy... I am living on Cony Island Seagate  area at that time I was home with my Family and how a remember the water came up to my house and flooded my basement and first floor of my house... I was very scared and desperate.... We basically lost everything at the first and basement floor...
We have received some help from FEMA like every homeowner in that area  but the rest was huge loss from our pockets...
We found structureline based on recommendations and we started to do renovation...Nicholas the General Manager helped us out to apply for a small loan so we could begin the  renovation...We needed to do a complete  house renovation ....
They took off the walls  in the basement and 1st floor, they did mold disinfection, replaced all drywall's, wiring, boiler, windows, doors, siding etc..
They did remodeling on the master bathroom from the first floor and kitchen, they did a wonderful job...We love their new engineered Hardwood floor and the new design of the bathroom with the big bathtub and shower cabinet ... The price we spend ed was a little higher than we were   expected because we did some design work in the living room and Kitchen but for sure it worth it....If Someone will ask me for a recommendation for sure I will recommend Structureline because they helped me out at that time ....Thanks"

"The town required structural drawings for the retaining wall around my pool and after speaking with and getting estimates from several Structural Engineering companies choose Magnus Engineering. The company was responsive and willing to provide the service quickly. James Strizki was the engineer; he was professional, patient and reassuring. He continued to follow-up even after receiving payment until I had the final inspection. They were reasonably priced and delivered the required signed sealed documents allowing me to finally close out the permits that were pending from the year before."

"The contractor is very good.  They are very punctual.  They provided the engineering drawings for the township, provided a detailed plan to replace the bowing wall, and the pinning of two other walls for structural support and the basement entrance.  They also provided support for a high water table issue
The crew was one of the best I have ever seen.  They came, worked extremely hard and completed the job on time and as the building inspector said," a stellar job".
They covered all objects in the basement to minimize the dust, and moved the washer and dryer, reconnecting them in their new locations.

"My husband and I couldnt say anything but great things about Greg and his team. My husband is a combat Veteran and I am a stay at home mom of 3 kids and 1 being a special needs child. This is our first home and when we moved in it was like problem after problem kept happening. Our basement flooded, our front stairs crumbled and collapsed and our windows were rotted through. The VA didn't protect us from buying a money pit. Needless to say all of our money went into fixing problems rather than doing the remodeling we wanted to do. When Greg found out we were in some trouble and needed help he came through right away! He sent his plumber over and had him do all of the plumbing we needed for a new bath/kitchen for basically the cost of parts!!! It was unbelieveable! And lifted a HUGE burden off of our shoulders! On top of that Greg also said he can help us out with anything else we need to do! This is such a professional and wonderful business! THEY GO ABOVE AND BEYOND! I would give them 10 stars and recommend to eveyone!"

Structural Engineering questions, answered by experts

Indications include cracks in walls, uneven floors, and sticking doors or windows that suggest foundation movements.

No, beams are the primary load-bearers for flooring or roofing systems, and they distribute the weight of the structure to your foundational supports, while joists bear far less weight and distribute their loads to the beams. Beams are usually thicker and longer, and they have support posts or foundation walls beneath them for support.

It is not recommended to cut or drill into LVL (laminated veneer lumber) beams. As major structural components of a home, their composite structure can be compromised by alterations, which can weaken them and lead to cracking over time. If you must make modifications to an LVL beam, it is crucial to consult a structural engineer or general contractor first. A professional can advise on whether it's safe and provide specifics on the appropriate bit size, depth, and directionality for any necessary drilling.

The depth of any foundation style depends on your climate and how deep the frost line is, as building code requires that the footers of a foundation—which are built into a monolithic slab—sit at least a foot below the frost line. At the southern tip of Florida, for example, a monolithic slab foundation would only need to sit 12 inches under the soil at the widest parts. On some parts of the Canadian border, the frost line is 100 inches, which would mean a minimum of 112 inches, which is prohibitively deep for a monolithic slab.

In framing, studs are placed at 16-inch intervals to coincide with the typical spacing of wall materials such as drywall or plywood. This spacing is called "on-center" and is necessary for maintaining structural stability and efficient use of materials. The 16-inch spacing also helps to distribute the weight evenly across the building's structure. For those looking to cut material costs and improve energy efficiency, 24-inch stud spacing can be employed through a method called "advanced framing". This requires careful planning and adherence to local building codes to ensure structural integrity.
