"A wonderful experience for a complicated project! I would use Green Sun Energy again for any service they provide. They made the generator install as easy and painless as possible. The crew was kind and efficient. Lots to do for an install such as this but they did it quickly, efficiently and were extremely organized. Just how I like it! Thank you so much!! "Brian was awesome and fast and courteous. Princeton Electrical was easy to communicate and negotiate with, and offers a fair price for their labor. Had a Level 2 EV charger installed from my townhouse basement to my garage in a few hours without problems."

"We have hired Plesh Electric to install a fixed generator. Plesh Electric called us to set up an appt the same day we were on Home Advisor. They came the next day to do a property survey and we received a proposal the very next day. They have not started the work yet BUT I can say that I am very impressed with Lisa their office manager. Customer Service is rare these days and so far in this process she has quickly applied for permits and submitted application to PSE&G. She has kept me up to date and I very much appreciate it. I am looking forward to their guys doing a quality job. Stay tuned!"

"I have used Pipe Works on numerous occasions as of this date and find them to provide excellent service at competitive prices. Their associates are great to work with and their prices are competitive. The work is always completed on time, as promised and the work area is left clean. I appreciate that they point out things that need repair in the not so distant future. It was great to wake up the other day with power coming from my new Kohler Generator"

"Jeff came out to to some repairs and install new outlets. While here he also installed a ceiling fan for me. Excellent work, reasonable price, cannot praise him or his work enough. Highly recommend!"

Generator Install questions, answered by experts

Generators are safe to use as long as they are installed and operated correctly according to the manufacturer's recommendations. The most critical safety tips are to never use a portable or fuel-powered generator inside an enclosed space due to the risk of lethal carbon monoxide poisoning; always operate it outdoors where fumes can dissipate away from your home. Additionally, never attempt to connect a generator to your home’s electrical panel yourself—hire a professional to ensure the setup meets safety standards. Finally, avoid overloading the generator by not connecting more appliances than it is rated for, as this can damage your equipment or cause a fire.

Setting up utilities on a vacant property usually takes at least a few months, or between 6 weeks to 16 weeks. This process requires working with the local planning and zoning department, hiring a building contractor or engineer to design the utility layout, securing permits, laying the lines, and connecting the utilities.

Generators run on a variety of fuel types, ranging from natural gas to solar power. Keep in mind that fuel costs varying by type:

  • Natural gas: $2,000–$21,000 per year

  • Liquid propane: $2,000–$21,000 per year

  • Diesel: $3,000–$20,000 per year

  • Gasoline: $500–$3,000 per year

  • Solar generator: $2,000–$25,000 per unit

  • Battery backup: $10,000–$25,000 per unit

Potential benefits of using a natural gas generator include reducing your carbon footprint, lower likelihood of carbon monoxide exposure, budget-friendly operating costs, and low-maintenance, continuous fuel supply. Some possible drawbacks, though, include higher initial installation costs, dependency on a natural gas supply, and installation complexity. Keep in mind that pros and cons will vary based on the type and brand of natural gas generator.

Costs depend on generator type, labor, and additional wiring or transfer switch requirements.
