"This was a top to bottom power wash, hand scrap, base priming, Ready Patch of boards, hand sanding of Ready Patch, another priming, top coat, trim work, wood repair and shutters of a 218 year old home. Results are amazing, so much so that people stop by to complement the quality of the workmanship. Words cannot due justice to the outcome of this time consuming project. If your home is in need of a professional, reliable and responsive team look no further. Hire Maurice and his crew. You won't be disappointed. Highly recommended."

"As it happens, Wilber's Painting has skilled carpenters on staff who are competent, experienced, and committed to old world craftsmanship. Our good fortune was getting Maynor, a highly talented carpenter, who constructed and installed the door, which is quite attractive. The installation was tricky because the 90 year-old frame was not perfectly squared but he managed to get the right fit. Mahogany was used for the door frame and safety glass for the insert. I opted not to have a screen insert, so the glass is a permanent fixture."

"Replaced missing siding and painted foundation: Eric was very prompt in responding to my request for a quote. He came to my house on a Sunday to give me an estimate and was extremely flexible with working within my time frame. His price was very reasonable and fair. He would check in with me as the job progressed to review what had been done to ensure I was happy with the work. He and his team were very polite, friendly and eager to make sure we were pleased with the job. I would definitely use them again."

"After a mold remediation project left our formerly finished basement looking like a disaster area, we gave Dave the job of rebuilding it. He replaced the framing, insulation, drywall, drop ceiling, and associated trim and molding. He also corrected some structural problems that were uncovered at the same time, and rebuilt the handrails and banisters on the staircase. All in all, it was a great job and completed in a timely manner. Highly recommended."

Carpentry questions, answered by experts

Bow windows need support because they are large and extend out from the exterior wall of the home. Bow windows may extend 1 foot to several feet from the outside of the home, so you’ll need to provide additional support to handle this weight. A window contractor will be able to provide the proper amount of support for your new bow window.

There are a few easy ways to locate a wall stud without a stud finder. First, try knocking on the wall with your knuckles. Most parts of the wall will sound hollow, but when you tap over a stud, it will sound more solid. Alternatively, since studs are spaced 16 or 24 inches apart, you can measure those distances from a corner of the room, which will always have a stud.

It’s sometimes safe to replace a load-bearing wall with a beam, but you need a structural engineer to sign off on the project. You’ll also likely have to upgrade to a steel I-beam or another material that’s stronger than wood to maintain the level of support you need without the wall underneath.

When deciding whether to use nails or screws for framing, the specific needs of the project must be taken into account. Nails have long been the go-to option for framing due to their affordability, ease of installation, and ability to withstand shear forces. They are perfect for structural framing projects where fast assembly is essential. In contrast, screws offer exceptional holding power and are particularly useful in situations requiring increased strength and resistance to pull-out forces. For projects that prioritize accuracy and long-lasting quality, screws may be the preferred option, though nails remain a dependable and efficient choice.

No rules state how much of a load-bearing wall can be removed. Rather, you need to adequately support any area that is removed. Support should always be added to as much wall area is being removed. Failing to support the area properly will result in structural damage.
