"We hired them to paint our kitchen cabinets. They were very professional and clean. Took down all the cabinets, sanded, and painted. We are very happy with the work. They showed up every day on time and cleaned up after themselves. Highly recommend them."

"Wilber's Painting did a fantastic job painting the exterior of my home. I own a 1926 Sears & Roebuck Kit house. The house is the Osborn kit model and has exquisite detailed wood exterior moldings. The house is part asbestos, part stucco and part wood. Wilber's painters did a magnificent job paying very close attention to each and every detail. Wilber's replaced rotted wood. Wilber's repaired damaged areas. The painters evenly, thoughtfully and generously applied the paint to the house in painstaking detail. The painters were friendly, kind and professional. Wilber guarantees his work and personally came to the home to review the job. Wilber's painting is really an excellent choice if you're painting your house -- interior or exterior. I highly recommend!"

"Replaced missing siding and painted foundation: Eric was very prompt in responding to my request for a quote. He came to my house on a Sunday to give me an estimate and was extremely flexible with working within my time frame. His price was very reasonable and fair. He would check in with me as the job progressed to review what had been done to ensure I was happy with the work. He and his team were very polite, friendly and eager to make sure we were pleased with the job. I would definitely use them again."

Carpentry questions, answered by experts

While some highly experienced homeowners can frame a house independently, it is not advisable. You will need ample carpentry experience, a team of helpers, and professionals to sign off on your work to meet local building codes. For the safest outcome, we recommend buying or building a house with the guidance of professionals.

Your local building code will list all the framing requirements for whatever type of structure you're building. Most exterior walls require spacing of 16 inches on-center, while many non-load-bearing interior walls only require 24 inches of spacing. However, there are also varying requirements depending on your construction material, so checking your municipality's rules is essential.

Bump-out additions can extend anywhere from 2 to 15 feet from an existing room. The right size will depend on how you plan to use the new space. For a cantilever bump-out, which doesn't require additional foundation support, the limit is typically 24 inches (2 feet). If a footing and foundation are part of the project, a bump-out can be much larger, even encompassing a whole room. It's also important to remember that many residential properties have limits on the total house size relative to the lot size.

The easiest way to tell if a wall is load bearing is to check if it’s an exterior wall or if it runs perpendicular to the joists above and below it (or parallel to beams). Exterior walls are almost always load-bearing, and walls that run under beams or parallel to them are also usually load-bearing. There are exceptions to these rules, and walls that don’t fit into these categories can still be load-bearing. If you’re unsure, hire a structural engineer to look at your home to assess whether or not the wall is structural.

Most of the time, you’ll want to use screws on your subfloor rather than nails. Nails can actually weaken plywood, whereas screws can easily penetrate without damage. They also form a more secure connection because of their shape, preventing squeaky floors and tightly holding the subfloor in place. That said, some contractors do prefer nails depending on the type of floor covering because they allow for more flexibility.
