"So smoothly! Scheduling and choosing our fence was super easy - they helped us choose which fencing, the hardware, and offered advice on other accessories. The crew showed up on time, and the fence was installed VERY quickly, and looks GREAT (5-6 years running). Over the years, some settling has occurred. I called to ask what can be done, and StraightForward came out and just corrected the leveling of the fence with no questions asked! WOW! Recently, one of the gate hinges snapped. It took just a bit to get someone to come out to look at it, but when he did, it was fixed in no time flat. And the gate works great now! And, to my surprise, it was the owner himself, Gary, that took the time to come out and service us. It isn't often that a company in this type of industry will continue with awesome customer service AFTER the product has been installed and the sale complete, but StraightForward is one of the few. We will have more fencing needs in the coming months/year, and will only make one phone call - to StraightForward. Great product. Great service!"

"We give LUCAS FENCING a 9 out of 10.  We would definitely use them again.  Here are the pros and cons we had with this experience.
PROS:
Tom Lucas is very friendly, promptly returns messages and phone calls, and keeps appointments.
He and his crew did excellent quality work without wasting any time.  They arrived promptly on the scheduled day.
He had no problem with minor changes we had while the fence was being repaired.
He is trustworthy; he came back for the old posts just like he said he would, and honored the Angie's List discount when it was
    forgotten on an amended invoice.

CONS:
It took awhile for us to get a scheduled date, farther out than expected (2 weeks vs 5 weeks).  His timetable was affected by the
bad weather we were experiencing, so it wasn't a major issue.
He had to come back for the old posts instead of taking them that day due to the existing weight on his truck.  He did pick them up
    as promised 2 days later.
9/10.  Thanks Tom!

"Instead three men arrived and the bars were installed perfectly in no time. This left time to fix a storm I only asked for an estimate for and time to hang a small shelf. I would have gladly paid extra for those repairs but the team volunteered to provide the service. I recommend Jack with no reservation

"The men came to the house much later than expected because they had a rush job before hand. (We didn't know this at first.)  When they did arrive, they explained what they were going to do then got to work right away and stopped when the sun went down.  Most of the fence went up on the 29th, but had to come back on the 30th to repair the existing gate and put the finishing touches on the fence they installed.  They made sure everything worked before leaving.  We are very pleased with the work and the fence and would use their services again if needed."

"It was not a good experience. I feel like they got too many responses from the deal. They ended up hiring a lot of sub-contractors they had not worked with for long. The owner came out initially and he was really great and knowledgeable. The guy they sent out to do the work was terrible to work with. He would not listen to me, was rude and cut corners. They used red marker to mark the tiles and the red marker never went away from the tile. I feel like the original company would have done a much better job and it was a shame the project did not go as I had hoped. We paid for supplies and also to have them to a little extra work outside of what the deal offered. I thought the additional pricing was fair. We never really followed up on having the work fixed because we were done with the project at that point and I just had a baby."

Gate Repair questions, answered by experts

Thieves can open almost anything with enough time and the right tools, but they also prefer easy targets that are unlikely to get them caught. Forcing open gates is loud and difficult, and to be able to open one electronically requires extensive knowledge of the system, which most thieves don't have. Electric and other security gates are great deterrents because the thief will move to an easier target. If the thief is determined to enter your property, they will most likely find a different entrance point.

Electric gates can be forced open if someone applies enough force to the edge furthest from the mounting bracket. You can reduce this risk by adding an electric lock to your gate opener. However, automatic gate openers generally help deter intruders, especially when paired with outdoor lighting and security cameras. Other home security tips include trimming trees surrounding the area for added visibility and installing motion sensors in your yard.

Yes, you can convert manual gates to electric operation. Installing a motor and an opening device from a kit allows you to convert any gate so it can open and close automatically. Be sure to buy the correct type of opener for your gate style. For example, some openers are specific to swinging gates, while others are for sliding gates. Get familiar with your swinging or sliding gate parts before you go shopping to avoid having to return to the store for the correct opener.

While it is possible to install a manual gate yourself, it is generally not recommended. Professional installation is strongly advised, especially for automated or large driveway gates. Gates can be extremely heavy, sometimes weighing hundreds of pounds, which makes them bulky and dangerous to maneuver into place. Proper installation requires perfect positioning and balancing to ensure the gate swings smoothly and functions as intended. For automated gates, the wiring is also hazardous and typically requires a licensed electrician. Mistakes during a DIY installation can be costly, as materials alone can average around $1,000. Given the safety risks and the difficulty of achieving a proper setup, it is best to hire a professional gate installer.

The cost to install a gate varies widely, with a typical range between $1,500 and $7,000. The average cost is around $3,500. However, the final price can be as low as $200 for a simple gate or as high as $12,000 for a large, automated security gate.

Key factors that determine the installation cost include:

  • Gate Material: This is a primary cost factor. Chain-link and vinyl are the most affordable, while wood and PVC are mid-range options. Wrought iron, aluminum, and other metals are the most expensive materials.

  • Automation: Automated gates are significantly more expensive than manual ones because they require motors, sensors, controls, and electrical installation.

  • Size and Type: The dimensions and style of the gate (e.g., swinging vs. sliding) will impact the price.

  • Security Level: Gates with advanced security features will increase the overall cost.
