"An inexperienced/inept contractor had installed a generator for us and we parted ways with him when we discovered he neglected to pull permits for the work. We called Kope in for a consultation and they verified that not only was the generator not big enough to power our whole home (as was our intention) but it was installed illegally. We  hired them to guide us through the permit process, and bring the generator up to code which included piping a gas line through the garage, installing the correct sized pipes and fixing several mistakes with the electric. They were prompt, professional and knowledgable and coordinated seamlessly with the plumber they recommended to complete that part of the generator installation.  We now have have a safe, operating, legal generator. I would recommend Kope without hesitation and will use them for my future electrical needs.

"I have no complaints about Mr. Electric. In fact, the technician went above and beyond and was excellent. He couldn't make it on the day of installation, which was unexpected, but his stand in honored his commitments. The only reason to not give 5 stars was that it seemed excessively expensive. I wouldn't pay that again for what it was. I'd do it myself. Even Angi gave me a reasonable quote. They charge six times that reasonable quote for a simple outlet transfer... 10/10 for customer service. I guess you'd have to be though, for all that money."

Generator Install questions, answered by experts

Sizing a generator is a careful process that requires calculating the electrical load of your entire house. You have to take into account every device you want to use and their wattage requirements, plus the wattage needed to start them, and look for a generator that can safely run all that at around 80% capacity.

In more practical terms, a small home can run on a 10,000-watt generator (and if you only want to power a few key appliances, much less than that). A mid-sized home may need something between 15,000 and 22,000 watts. Larger homes require 25,000 watts or more.

In most municipalities, you will need a permit to install a permanent home generator, including emergency backup, partial-home, and whole-home generators. A permit for a generator usually costs between $50 and $250, depending on where you live. Your electrician or certified generator installer will usually pull the permit for you—and might be required to do so by your building department—but you’ll be on the hook for the cost of the permit. You should ask your installer before agreeing to any work if they will pull the necessary permits for your project.

Potential benefits of using a natural gas generator include reducing your carbon footprint, lower likelihood of carbon monoxide exposure, budget-friendly operating costs, and low-maintenance, continuous fuel supply. Some possible drawbacks, though, include higher initial installation costs, dependency on a natural gas supply, and installation complexity. Keep in mind that pros and cons will vary based on the type and brand of natural gas generator.

A home that is 2,500 square feet will likely need a 20kW to 25kW generator. Consult your local generator installer to confirm the generator size needed to power your home before purchasing a new one. Be sure to consider how much power your necessary devices need to run.

The amount of time a standby generator can run continuously is around 3,000 hours on average. However, standby generators can generally run indefinitely as long as they have a continuous fuel supply. Generators hooked up to a home’s natural gas supply are the best option for extended usage, as these won’t rely on a finite fuel supply based on how much you have in storage. Generators running on liquid propane or diesel won’t last as long, as these require fuel storage and regular refueling to stay running.
