"Mr. Dolloff was prompt in his response to our inquiry into landscaping projects we were considering. He gave us a free estimate on several projects. The cost seemed very fair and we had him complete a quarter of the entire project ~ grooming a hillside with severe erosion and creating a parking area for 2 cars. The hillside is beautiful. Exactly what we wanted and better than we expected. The parking area was not what I would call satisfactory. But in all honesty, they completed both jobs on time but unfortunately it was just the day before we got all that heavy rain the weekend of October 21st. We are planning for him to complete the other landscaping we need down and he offered to clean up the parking area as soon as the weather settles down."

We design very effective low voltage lighting systems, patios and walkways built with pavers and natural stones, decorative ponds as well as your more typical landscaping needs such as lawns, plants and irrigation systems. Our landscaping plans are as elaborate or basic as you wish. Our staff include MCLP (Massachusetts Certified Landscape Professional) and certified installer of pavers and segmental retaining walls and we are a certified designer and installer of low voltage landscape lights. Tony has owned and run Artistic Landscapes since its inception, in 2004, and he was elated to be recognized as the "Match of the Game" by the New England Patriots Vince Wilfork for his mentoring efforts through the Big Brothers/Big Sisters Program of Massachusetts.

I questioned whether today would be a good day to get all the leaves but I was assured if not today, they would be back for the rest. I would say 95% of the leaves were picked up and the remaining leaves are under snow. I don't know how they did it. All were very pleasant and worked hard. He was here within 30 minutes and said he could do the job. He would be back Monday or Tuesday (7/25-7/26). 45 minutes later he called back and said he had an opening today and could do it now if we wanted. Bob was back within the hour and the stump is gone and the hole filled in. Bob and his crew are polite, friendly and great at what they do. We will be using them again and would highly recommend him to anyone."

Using a drill to bore holes in the stump's center speeds up the process, whatever method you use. If you don’t have a drill, you can still chainsaw or chisel the stump to make it hollow; it will just take more elbow grease and time. Steer clear of burning the stump to hollow it if you can’t drill some holes in it first. Otherwise, getting it to light, stay lit, and burn right through will be a challenge.

The most common alternative is burning the stump first, then dealing with the cinders and ashes. As you can imagine, this option creates fire hazards, especially since roots can burn underground, hidden, for long afterward. That’s why many states and cities have outlawed the use of stump burning entirely. We do not recommend this option as a viable alternative unless you get a permit from the local fire department and practice all safe burning procedures.

Others prefer a more long-term DIY approach of degrading the stump with home mixtures like Epsom salt and vinegar injected directly into it.
