"Micah was so friendy! The poor guy was ready to start his holiday but was so willing to help us out. We needed him to come that very day as we were leaving for Wyoming very early the next morning. The water was not going down in our toilet. We used a plunger and a snake without success and it was backing up into our bathroom sink and causing our kitchen sink to, for want of a better word, â gurgleâ . He originally asked if he could come in the evening which was definitely fine with us. He called me back shortly after weâ d ended our call and asked if he could actually come right then. OF COURSE! Fixed our problem and wasnâ t too costly for the work he did. Basically guarantees his work. Says if we have a problem within the week, he will come back at no charge. Within a month? Discounted rate. Great, great guy!"

"We were in the need of a new plumber and we chose Dan Lavigne through Home Advisor. Dan was very prompt in calling us back to make an appointment. Over the phone, we told him that we needed to install a new toilet and to repair an existing one. He was very courteous and professional and came out within a reasonable time frame to do the work for us. He did an excellent job and we are very pleased with his service and pricing. We have other small jobs for him and we are definitely calling him back! He is great and we highly recommend him."

Toilets questions, answered by experts

Yes, you can fill your toilet tank manually to help it flush, or you can pour the water directly into the bowl to flush it manually. This will work for the majority of toilets, as most use a gravity feed system. However, you should only ever use this as a temporary solution. If your toilet tank isn’t filling, you should find out why. First, make sure the speedy valve connected to your toilet and your water main are open. If that doesn’t solve the issue, call in a professional to address the problem.

Technically, you can put an elongated toilet seat on a round toilet, but it’s not a good idea. Elongated toilet seats are a few inches longer than round toilets, so they will hang over the front edge of your toilet, which isn’t appealing. Additionally, an unsupported toilet seat or portion of a toilet seat is more likely to crack and shift, which could result in injury to whoever uses the toilet. Always match your toilet seat style to your toilet, or replace the toilet entirely if you’re looking to switch styles.

You generally cannot replace a 10-inch rough-in toilet with a 12-inch model without making significant plumbing updates. A 12-inch rough-in toilet will not fit a 10-inch rough-in space because the floor drain is in the wrong position. To accommodate the larger toilet, you would need to move the drainpipe, which could cost between $0.75 and $30 per linear foot, plus labor. In most cases, it is more cost-effective and simpler to purchase a new 10-inch rough-in toilet. However, it is possible to install a 10-inch rough-in toilet in a 12-inch space by using a longer connector.

Plumbing installation costs in renovations typically range from $300 to $1,500 or more, depending on the complexity and specifics of the project.

First, check that you have cut off the water supply to your toilet. This is a project that can only be done safely if running water cannot reach your toilet fixture. If you're seeing water trickle out after you've confirmed that the water supply is shut off, you can probably rest assured that what you're seeing isn't a problem. It's common for leftover water to spill out when you're removing your toilet's fill valve. If something goes wrong while you're working on your toilet, you'll need to look at your home's policy to see if your homeowner insurance covers water damage.
