Different self-leveling brands and compounds have their own specific instructions for preparation; some may require that you add primer or grind the surface. Lally columns do require some kind of footing to ensure they have a strong enough base to provide the support they need to deliver, and, at the very least, they need to attach to the floor below. Some contractors will just use the existing foundation as a footing for temporary Lally columns, while some circumstances demand that the expert install a new footing. You might need a local structural engineer to weigh in on which is best for your project.

One of the best base materials for a floating deck is a layer of gravel or compacted paver base to promote drainage and stability. Additionally, using concrete deck blocks or similar supports helps evenly distribute the weight and keep the structure level. These base materials help minimize moisture buildup, reducing shifting and rotting.

Concrete dries faster in the heat than in the cold, but when concrete cures too fast, it can cause weak concrete. Avoid pouring concrete when temperatures are below 40 degrees Fahrenheit.
