"Signed contract on May 8 for deck build.On May 12 rep came to my office to collect deposit of apprx $13,000. He said project team meeting on Wed & would update me then on start date etc. On Fri May 16 I had to reach out to him. He wrote the team had met & materials were ordered. An hour later he wrote back that he was misinformed & that his boss was going to call me next week. Despite this, dep check cashed. On Mon 5. 20 rep wrote back that they had forgotten certain costs & to proceed it would be $8,000 more. Not a typo. $8,000 more. No apology. Ridiculous, contract rescinded. I wrote that he could return my deposit at my office just as he had collected it. On Wednesday the 21st I got a text from "Tom," presumably the owner/boss, saying he would "drop a check in the mail" to my address. Today is May 30th, Friday, and still no check. Check at a minimum should have been overnighted. They owe me interest not to mention the deposit to hire a contractor who will honor contract. Bad."

Longer screws can make a door more secure, but this isn’t a foolproof method for security. Replacing the short screws in your door’s strike plate with screws that are 3 inches long will make it much more difficult for an intruder to force entry by kicking down the door, but it won’t do anything to stop them from picking the lock. 

Most of the time, a squeaky door is the result of dry hinges, where metal parts rub together without enough lubrication. Dirt, dust, or rust can also build up inside the hinge and add to the friction. Loose screws or slight misalignment can shift things just enough to create that irritating squeaking noise. Worn-out hinges or swelling wood from humidity changes can also be part of the problem on older doors. A good cleaning and proper lubrication usually take care of it, but if the squeak sticks around, it’s worth checking for bigger issues with the hinges or alignment. 

WD-40 can help with a stiff or squeaky hinge, but it’s a short-term rather than a long-term solution. It works by breaking down rust and grime, but it evaporates quickly and won’t keep the hinge lubricated for long. After using it to free up the movement, wipe the hinge clean and follow up with a true lubricant like silicone spray or white lithium grease. 

Check for alignment issues or swelling due to moisture. A simple hinge adjustment or sanding may rectify the problem.

Even if you’re an advanced DIYer, repairing a sliding glass door yourself is not a good idea. This project requires precise measurements and work to ensure the door aligns properly within the space and frame, otherwise, you’ll have an uneven door on your hands. Additionally, most repairs require knowledge of taking the door apart and putting it back together with the replacement part, which if not done correctly, could cause massive problems. It’s best to leave this project to a sliding door repair specialist.
