The R-value is a rating that measures the insulation’s thermal resistance (in other words, how well it insulates). For most pipe insulation, the R-value will fall between one and five. The higher the R-value, the more protection for your pipes. All pipe insulation materials should have an R-value listed in the product description or on the product label.

Insulation prevents heat transfer, which keeps your home cool in summer and warm in winter. Regulating the temperature in your home is not only more comfortable for you, but will lower your heating and cooling bills—it’s a win-win. Make sure to determine the correct amount of insulation to ensure it is enough for your home and climate.

Canned spray foam has an R-value of R-3.7 per inch. However, it’s not great for use as insulation. Also known as single-component spray foam, it doesn’t expand as much as two-part types that work for insulating the whole house. Save the canned foam for gaps around doors and windows.

Excluding carpet, strand-woven bamboo provides excellent underfoot heat. Laminate flooring is also good for insulation and preventing cold feet in the winter. Bamboo tends to work better in climates that have more consistent temperatures, while laminate does a better job at insulating floors in homes that experience more extreme temperature changes, such as the deciduous climates of the northeastern U.S.

You won’t find anything inside a cupola on a house because it’s hollow (think of an upside-down cup), allowing air to ventilate out of a roof via vents and light to come in via windows. They also usually have a base, vents around the middle (usually louvers), and a pointed cap at the top.
