"Terry inspected my foundation, but unlike the other inspectors, he inspected and measured inside my house as well as outside, spotting cracks that helped him diagnose the problems. He proposed a solution that involved placing pilings beneath the foundation in the back of the house. The work went extremely well. Daniel headed up the installation of the pilings, and after three days, I was able to open the sliding door in my basement for the first time in a year. Everything was cleaned up I am very pleased with the quality and price, and I strongly recommend VFS to everyone."

"I asked JES to inspect our foundation to determine if we had a foundation or drywall issue. Ben did a thorough evaluation and told me that we did not have a foundation problem. I appreciate his honesty and would recommend JES."

"My home has a chimney that was unsafe to use (cracked masonry liner). I dreaded the time and cost of a tear down and replacement. I contacted "Shamrock Chimney" and scheduled an appointment with their lead technician "Tony". He suggested a less costly and safer alternative (steel liner and a resealing of the outer brickwork. The work was performed over a two-day period. I am fully satisfied with the results. One thing I really apricate is the communication during the project. The "front office" would let me know by either phone or email when the project would start, and then Tony and would give me updates. All and all the whole process went smoothly. Also, this was my first time with "Angi", I hope to use their services again in the future."

"I have had Andrew Goodnight do a few small projects in the past and have been very satisfied with that work. I then called him about a deck repair project. Old deck was improperly installed and was starting to rot out at the post/footer junction. He made great suggestions and recommendations for a new deck with low maintenance options. He removed the old deck and footers, re-sloped the ground, poured new concrete footers at the correct elevation, then installed new synthetic/composite framing, railing, stairs and decking along with hidden fasteners. He provided the best pricing, the best options and we are elated with this new deck. I have many pictures that I am willing to share!"

Masonry questions, answered by experts

The United States Postal Service (USPS) recommends placing a mailbox 6 inches to 8 inches back from the curb. If your lot is unusual, speak with town authorities or the local post office to determine the correct placement.

The exact cost of bricks depends on the type and size of the bricks you use for your project. Generally, standard clay bricks cost between $350 and $850 for a thousand bricks, or an average of $550. Brick veneer costs around the same for materials but is easier to install than solid bricks, so you’ll save on labor by choosing this option.

Modern brick homes have a brick facade over standard framing and sheathing, so the brick offers minimal added structural stability. A home with traditional brick construction is more durable than a stick-built home, as the double-layer brick walls and rebar resist higher lateral wind loads and support heavier loads up top, as well.

Mortar and thinset both serve the same purpose—tile adhesion—but have different compositions and use-cases. Thinset is heatproof and presents a wide range of possibilities due to the added polymers. Mortar is typically used for bonding stones and brick. Thinset is rarely used outside, while mortar is rarely used inside.

Staining or painting brick isn’t something to do on a whim. Make sure you really want to live with stained brick, because once you apply the stain, it’s permanent. Sure, it will fade over time, but you can’t restore the brick to its natural tones after applying a stain or paint.
