"I hired er walls in 2018 to remedy damage done by previous excavator to install a retaining wall that left my neighborhood road in jeopardy of collapsing. They promptly arrived on the job to begin the work of fixing the problem that was left by the previous excavator. Excellent communication with me every step of the way through the process. So pleased with the work that I have had them back to do other projects over the last couple of years. Has constructed my retaining walls to last a lifetime with no further worries or maintenance. Excellent work and a truly good outcome in correcting a problem caused by someone else. I highly recommend this company."

"NC Top Landscaping has done an excellent weed eating job of our property. Jose and Juan arrive on time and have a great work ethic. Our property includes creek banks that are somewhat steep, a section that is wet as well as outbuildings. We are very pleased with their work. The DeBruhls"

"We are so pleased with the work that was done. We had a failing, ill-constructed concrete retaining wall. They removed it, cleaned up the debris and seeded/covered the area. When we asked to them to create a wooden guard rail, they were very accommodating. We plan on having the help us with future projects."

Retaining Wall Installers questions, answered by experts

Yes, you can use cinder blocks for many purposes, including retaining walls, foundations, garage walls, and fences. Building a cinder block retaining wall costs between $60 and $200 per linear foot, including materials and professional labor. For a 30-foot-long retaining wall, the cost ranges from $1,800 to $6,000.

Generally, a railroad tie retaining wall consisting of a single line of ties should be between 3 and 4 feet tall—and the height often tops out at around 6 feet. You can go taller, but you may need additional footings and reinforcements, including a second layer of railroad ties to support the added weight of the soil it’s holding back.

Proper design and construction prevent erosion and add structural stability to landscapes.

The lifespan of a retaining wall varies based on its material, installation quality, maintenance, and local climate, with an average range of 20 to 100 years. Retaining walls made from durable materials like concrete, stone, and brick generally last a minimum of 50 years. Concrete walls typically last between 50 and 100 years, while brick can last for over a century in ideal conditions. Timber retaining walls can last from 20 to 40 years, depending on the wood quality, and pressure-treated wood walls average around 30 years. It is important to note that a retaining wall can fail prematurely if it was poorly constructed, for example, with inefficient footings or without necessary rebar reinforcements.

Most railroad tie retaining walls have a life span of 20 to 30 years, though you may need to replace your wall sooner if it’s repeatedly exposed to heavy rain, runoff, and excess moisture. Railroad ties are typically treated with creosote, which makes them much more durable than untreated wood. Though they last longer, they don’t last forever. For the most longevity, make sure your retaining wall has a sturdy base and steel reinforcements. You should also install drainage to direct water away from the wall.
