"Hired to install a river rock driveway which included a cement apron at entry of garage. Cement splattered on new garage door; trim work surrounding garage and on the siding of the garage. Multiple attempts made to have this fixed. Many promises it would be done but after 17 months, we are still waiting. Calls were not returned; promised return to repair and then ? no showed?. Multiple excuses from getting new phone to ?forgot?. "

Retaining Wall Installers questions, answered by experts

Poured concrete is likely the cheapest way to build a retaining wall, as this material costs anywhere from $6 to $8 per square foot. The next best budget-friendly option is to use landscaping timbers. These timbers are great for DIY projects, as they don’t require tools to successfully build a retaining wall. Landscape timber costs around $10 to $14 per square foot. Depending on your chosen garden style, you can also go with natural stones or concrete blocks. Natural stones can be expensive if you buy them, but they’re a lot less costly if you can source them from your property.

Costs range from $5,000 to $15,000, depending on size, material, and design complexity.

Yes, to build a retaining wall, a permit is required. Similarly, any repairs or modifications to an existing retaining wall require permits. If the planned wall measures higher than 4 feet, most municipalities require designs and permits come through a licensed engineer. In some locations, if the wall is shorter than 4 feet, a permit may not be required. For the requirements in your area, contact your local government.

Costs depend on material type, labor rates, and additional features like decorative finishes or reinforcement.

Failure to compact the soil during construction is the most common cause of leaning retaining walls. In addition, poor drainage can lead to excessive water pressure behind a retaining wall, pushing against it until it begins to move forward away from the soil it is holding back.
