"Had requested recommendations from several landscapers on HomeAdvisor and Chris promptly responded. He came to my home to access my needs and we discussed what I was looking for. Within a couple of days, Chris provided a full design layout for my review. Once I approved the design, Chris and team scheduled the installation date (within a week of approval) and completed the entire job in a day. Chris goes the extra mile to ensure his clients are happy and satisfied with the work. He is very professional and easy to work with. I am very pleased with the finished job and wouldn't hesitate to hire Chris again if the need arises! Thanks Chris!"

"For this project, we received quotes from four different companies to install a patio with a firepit and sitting wall, as well as large sections of retaining wall and garden wall for our property. 3 of the 4 companies came back in a similar price range (including Holland's), while the other came in lower. The lower quote came from a company that had zero flexibility with their proposed design, and we therefore eliminated them from contention for the job. Of the remaining 3 quotes, it was obvious that Holland's was going to be the most flexible, the easiest to communicate with, and the best to work with in terms of providing expertise and suggestions for design ideas. And that held true for the whole project. Once we selected them to complete the work, they put us on the schedule for ~3 weeks out. The communication was great in the lead up to the start date, and Steven and Shannon answered several questions for us along the way. They sent us to a Site One supply house to select our stone / rock / pavers, and helped us work our selections and ideas together into a proposed design. Steven stopped by the house a few times to discuss our plan, and just before the project to paint out the proposed outline and to talk through all the remaining details before starting work. They started work 1 day before their predicted start date which was a pleasant surprise, and had the entire patio and all of the foundation for the walls/firepit complete in 3 days (Thurs-Sat). They started capping the walls with flagstone and veneering them with our selected stone the following Monday, and finished up towards the end of the week. Progress was a bit slower those days, but still very steady. The quality of the work was quite phenomenal, as you can see in the photo, and we are very pleased with the result. We did run into one issue, but it was handled very well and resolved to our satisfaction. As it turned out, the wrong color pavers had been ordered for our patio, an issue that we did not notice until they started on the wall (color contrast made the difference stand out a bit more). After we asked a question about the color contrast, Steven revisited his order to discover his mistake, and immediately came forward with the information. His honesty and willingness to admit a mistake are to be commended, especially as those behaviors are not the norm from contractors today. In addition, they immediately came up with a plan to make it right, even if that meant ripping up the patio and re-doing it or offering a credit for the work done. Ultimately we were happy with the result and the look of the patio, and chose to keep it as-is. All things considered, we can't say enough good things about Holland's Hardscapes. Their crews were amazing, the quality of the work was excellent, and the end result is fantastic. Their honesty, flexibility, and commitment to making right on their mistake shows what type of people Shannon and Steven are. Thanks for the amazing new outdoor space!"

"Stone & Lawn Care was excellent throughout the planning and installation of our patio. They worked with us to plan the size, layout, design, installation, and cost of the retaining wall and the patio itself. Maybe Javier's best characteristic is his ability to communicate from the beginning to the end of a project. We always knew from start to finish when his crew would be here, what they would be doing on any particular day, and when they expected to be finished. And Javier's communication was as good as their execution as everything was done exactly as planned and scheduled. The finished product is excellent. The patio looks completely professional from one end to the other and the retaining wall is every bit as pleasing as the patio, both functionally and esthetically. We would heartily recommend Stone & Lawn Care for any project needing stonework and if we have another instance to need tis type of work, we will be happy to use Stone & Lawn Care again ourselves."

Retaining Wall Installers questions, answered by experts

Sand and gravel are two suitable options for filling behind a retaining wall. If you’re building your own retaining wall, you’ll complete this part of the process—known as backfilling—after you finish laying the blocks. Make sure not to skip it—otherwise, you could wind up with drainage issues, which can cause your retaining wall to collapse.

The longevity of flood walls depends on how they were constructed, but most wood, gravel, and cement flood walls last 10 years. While aluminum flood walls may cost far more initially, they can be a good investment as they can last decades and will not be damaged by exposure to the elements.

Generally, a railroad tie retaining wall consisting of a single line of ties should be between 3 and 4 feet tall—and the height often tops out at around 6 feet. You can go taller, but you may need additional footings and reinforcements, including a second layer of railroad ties to support the added weight of the soil it’s holding back.

Small retaining walls still require a foundation of some kind, typically a concrete footing. This helps to ensure the wall is structurally sound and prevents the ground from shifting over time, especially during those winter freeze/thaw cycles. The footing helps spread the weight of the wall and the load it carries over a larger area of the ground, thus assisting with stability. This is true of small retaining walls, larger rock garden walls, and the like.

Yes, to build a retaining wall, a permit is required. Similarly, any repairs or modifications to an existing retaining wall require permits. If the planned wall measures higher than 4 feet, most municipalities require designs and permits come through a licensed engineer. In some locations, if the wall is shorter than 4 feet, a permit may not be required. For the requirements in your area, contact your local government.
