You can put a structure under your bathtub for support. Many modern tubs come with a built-in support structure underneath. Almost any type of mortar or floor-leveling compound is acceptable for new bathtubs that don’t include a support structure.

You can also install spray foam under an existing bathtub to eliminate or reduce squeaking or sagging. However, spray foam isn’t rigid enough for primary tub support.

Installing a drop-in tub yourself is possible, especially if you’re replacing your existing tub with a new one of the same size. The structure must be sturdy enough to hold the tub when it’s filled with water, and you’ll need to seal it. Alcove tubs come in fiberglass, acrylic, or enameled steel. Fiberglass is the most affordable but least durable, while acrylic is the highest-end and most durable (as long as you don’t go with a poor grade of acrylic, which will be prone to scratches). Enameled steel, where a steel tub is coated in a layer of porcelain, is a wallet-friendly middle ground. This material is highly durable but prone to chips.

You should consider replacing your bathtub if the tub—or any potential refinishing—is older than about 20 years old. However, acrylic and fiberglass bathtubs have a shorter lifespan (about 10 to 15 years). You may decide to replace your bathtub sooner if there are stains or mold you can’t get rid of, no matter how much you clean it, or if you find leaks and cracks that could lead to costly water damage.

All bathtub materials have advantages and disadvantages. Cast iron is the most durable option, but these heavy tubs are expensive and not always suitable for bathtubs on upper floors. Acrylic is a good option for those on a budget. However, copper has many unique benefits if you want something that wows and requires minimal maintenance.
