"Jose was great to work with and was able to come out the same day I called him. My granite countertop had settled over time and the seams were uneven. Jose quickly diagnosed the issue, explained what caused it, and how he’d correct it. He leveled the countertop seams, matched the seam glue perfectly, and my countertops look good as new."

"I requested assistance Friday morning to have the backsplash removed in my new home prior to painters and restoration coming in Monday morning. They responded immediately. Although booked solid for the next two weeks, they had a window of time that afternoon. I was very impressed with Brandon's knowledge on a variety of construction things. He was super professional and helpful. They were able to remove a couple base cabinets the cabinet refacer was having trouble removing as well. I was very pleased with BSM Services!"

"JM Marble and Granite did an amazing job replacing our old countertop with a new, modern Quartz countertop. The process was extremely easy and JM made a great recommendation that saved us some money. After going to the showroom to pick out our slab, JM suggested a different slab that was more economical and that we actually liked better. After the slab selection the work was completed very quickly and scheduled to fit with the timing of the entire kitchen redesign. Installation took less than one day. JM also did our bathroom countertops and built-in desk top to match the kitchen. Their work was very high quality and looks amazing. We highly recommend this contractor."

Countertops and Backsplashes questions, answered by experts

The average lifespan of an epoxy countertop is around 10 years, but this material can last longer with proper maintenance. This material happens to be resistant to most kinds of countertop damage (think: water and heat damage) though damage can happen. In the event you do damage your epoxy, you can often fill it with an epoxy repair kit.

While Formica® countertops are scratch-resistant, they are not fully scratch-proof. They will develop marks on their upper decorative layer more easily than quartz, granite, or porcelain tile. Always use cutting boards for food prep and avoid dragging heavy items, such as blenders or big pots, across the surfaces.

The angle at which you cut countertops depends on the material, your intended outcome, and the location of the cut. For example, rather than cutting a straight 90-degree angle for internal corners, cut edges at a 45-degree angle to give a clean, professional look. For outside edges, most homeowners want squared-off sides, so 90-degree angles can make the most sense there. Because you want to get angles exactly right to minimize seams and eliminate the need for patching, be sure to measure several times before cutting and use the right equipment to get sharp, accurate angles.

Yes, Corian® and other solid surface materials can be cut with standard woodworking tools, such as a circular saw or a jigsaw. However, it is crucial to use the correct type of blade to avoid damaging the material.

For a circular saw, a tungsten carbide-tipped blade is required; a triple chip grind blade is highly recommended. For a jigsaw, you should use a fine-tooth down-cutting blade. Do not use blades designed for cutting wood, as they can cause microfractures that weaken the edges of the countertop. A diamond blade is also unnecessary, as those are designed for harder materials like natural stone, which Corian is not.

After cutting, the edge will be rough. It is essential to sand and smooth the cut edge to prevent microfractures, which can eventually compromise the integrity of the countertop.

Porcelain is a relatively affordable, mid-range countertop material. It typically costs between $50 to $70 per square foot.

Compared to quartz, porcelain is slightly more affordable, as quartz generally ranges from $50 to $200 per square foot. However, lower-quality, builder's grade quartz can be similar in price to porcelain.

Compared to granite, the price can be similar, depending on the quality of the stone. While granite slabs can range from $50 to $200 per square foot, you can find lower-end granite in the same price range as porcelain. High-end granites will cost significantly more.

Porcelain is generally more expensive than laminate, acrylic, and ceramic, but less expensive than high-end slate, concrete, and marble. A key benefit is that porcelain does not require sealing, which reduces long-term maintenance costs.
