He returned my call promptly, he got me an estimate quickly and he completed the job almost immediately. The work was done professionally, neat and clean--no issues whatsoever. The price was half of what another contractor I contacted quoted me--I couldn't be more pleased! Happy to recommend this company and would NOT hesitate to call him again for help. I was asked to contact AKR a couple weeks before I returned to NC so a date would be ready for install on the windows, which were totally paid for in 2013.. Did that, let them know when I arrived and still had to wait a couple weeks to have anyone do the work.
Let me tell you, the men who arrived did a good job structurally, cleaned up but left equipment on my porch for 6 weeks..I called, and emailed the company to no avail. NOONE would get back with me.. The owner wouldn't return voice mails either.
Finally after 6 weeks I got in touch with them, only to be told the window ( which was a picture and two highlights) was in but the ''header'' for the picture was ''damaged''.. They had to order a new one. So I waited for a couple weeks.. No contact whatsoever. Finally got in touch with someone at the office and she told me two other headers were ordered and also ''damaged''....REALLY??? REALLY???
Dear Lord, the window company they deal with should be pushed aside and another used!!!! Of course, some contact with the people running this AKR builders would have been a nice thing so I knew what the heck was going on.
Well, I was reassured the work would be done in the time I was at my home in NC...That being March 1, 2014 until the end of May 2014 all of the 10 windows and other trim work would be done. .Well, yes, how many months does it actually take a responsible contractor to install 10 windows, trim them inside and out???? Surely not 3 months!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Actually I waited so long for AKR to complete the front picture and highlights (which were in my garage, still factory wrapped0 installed, I finally had to get another contractor .to finish AKR's work so I could return home. How did they know anything was damaged if the picture window wasn't even opened up and checked out??
Now the $3040.00 that I was charged in LABOR ONLY. . . Is still to be paid. I'm attempting to pay this, have sent a check for a portion of this and I had the secretary email me to say they wouldn't cash it because they wanted more. The owner got on the phone and tried to get me to commit to paying either 2 or 3 payments because he already paid his men. I'm doing the what I can to pay him and that's not good enough, but of course I was supposed to be oh, so patient trying to get my work completed over the course of 3 months???? With no contact from them..
Well, if he actually got that amount of money out of the laborers who worked at my home....God bless him!! The install of the windows they did manage to get in was very nice. However, they put white trim in. . .was supposed to be natural, stained. Finally got the white stuff out of the house only to be reassured the natural would be stained by their painter..Still waiting for him to stop over and do that ON THE WALL I MIGHT ADD.!!! Also, the bathroom window was supposed to be obscure glass. It wasn't, so waited so long for that to be ''reordered'' I told them to forget it after 4 or so weeks when it did come in.
Here's the thing with this company. You'll hear just what you need to from the person who runs AKR. Take heed, he talks a good game. Of course, after the work he thinks he completed is done, he has the nerve to call and want to know when you're going to pay him for the ''work'' his company did..because he already paid his men.
BEWARE IS THE BEST ADVICE I CAN GIVE. GO SOMEWHERE ELSE.!!!

On 04/22/2014, I met with Gina Fuhrmann, of Fuhrmann Engineering at my house to resolve these issues and when I realized the meeting was a waste of time I asked her to leave. She refused and my wife asked her to leave and she refused again. She did not leave until my wife called 911. I have never approved any proposal from Fuhrmann Engineering or CES, nor have I agreed to pay for any work except the foundation waterproofing. "David did substantial work to repair foundation damage that was found during removal of a large tree that fell during the Helene storm. The foundation was bulging/collapsing inwards below grade to the interior of an earthen basement. The project needed more than a canned approach, which several other foundation contractors described that they could do. David explained several options for addressing the failure and stabilizing the foundation over the longer term. I was impressed by his thinking and very satisfied by the work. He was able to do the work in a timely fashion during a period when he was working on quite serious road and foundation repair projects resulting from Helene damage. I would absolutely hire him again."

"Communication was great. The house is tall and on a hill. We talked to 3 different companies about doing the work. One company chose not to do it because the house is tall and sits on a hill. Of the other two companies, Total Construction had the best estimate and the people were so nice. I'm so glad they came out to do the work. Each day they cleaned up behind themselves and made it easy for my family to live in the home even though the work was being done. Everything looks so nice now. I know some of my neighbors will be using this company now because they loved watching the work & the outcome!! Great Company!!! Highly recommended!!"

FAQs for structural engineering projects in Highlands, NC
No, it’s not legal for unlicensed individuals to conduct structural calculations for buildings or building repairs. Not only do licensing requirements prevent DIYers from tackling this project, but mistakes can also be extremely dangerous and put your property and anyone inside or near it at risk of severe injury or even death. You should always hire a licensed and certified local structural engineer to make structural calculations.
Yes, all states require structural engineers to carry the proper license, with specifics determined by each state. You can use Angi’s state licensing tool to confirm that the structural engineer you’re considering holds the required licensing to tackle your job. Hiring an unlicensed structural engineer will not only cause issues with permits but it could also lead to an unsafe building. The cost of a professional, licensed, and experienced engineer is well worth the investment.
The process of hiring a structural engineer starts by finding reliable professionals in your area and comparing quotes from at least three of them. From there, you can narrow down your selection by asking some leading questions:
Do you have experience working in my specific area?
Do you have professional indemnity insurance?
What will your structural report cover?
Do you charge a flat fee for a structural report or by the hour?
How long have you been in business?
Do you have a list of customer references?
Structural engineers typically charge between $100 and $250per hour, but many jobs won’t be based on a per-hour fee. Instead, the structural engineer will offer a flat rate for the inspection and structural calculations. The flat rate for a structural engineer costs an average of around $550, but you could see prices ranging from $300 to $800, depending on the complexity of your project and how easy it is to access certain parts of your home for the inspection.
Whether you’re building a new home or building an extension on your existing property, you will likely need both a structural engineer and an architect. A structural engineer will determine what loads your foundation and framing can safely handle, and an architect will draw plans according to those structural calculations to simplify the building process. You can start by contacting a structural engineer near you, as many work alongside architects and can get all of the prep work done at once.
