"I hired er walls in 2018 to remedy damage done by previous excavator to install a retaining wall that left my neighborhood road in jeopardy of collapsing. They promptly arrived on the job to begin the work of fixing the problem that was left by the previous excavator. Excellent communication with me every step of the way through the process. So pleased with the work that I have had them back to do other projects over the last couple of years. Has constructed my retaining walls to last a lifetime with no further worries or maintenance. Excellent work and a truly good outcome in correcting a problem caused by someone else. I highly recommend this company."

"I requested 6 quotes from local contractors. While Patrick Stollenmaier was not the cheapest, his plan was quite detailed and added a secondary wall 6 ft in to ensure the land was usable for a raised bed garden and lawn area on the upper segment. While the start was delayed by a couple of weeks, the work done was exemplary. At 80 ft long, the crew had limited space to work but all was coordinated with me and neighbor. Some of the details included ample 'deadmen' to better secure the wall to the hillside, much gravel for adequate drainage as well as downspout drains directed to the street to drain rather than draining into neighboring yard. The crew cleaned the site daily and, when finished, spread straw and grass seed on the lawn areas and applied sufficient mulch on the garden site."

Customers say: Super punctual

"Fantastic folks. Al and his team were highly professional, attentive to detail, on budget, and on time. They replaced my leaning retaining wall, concrete steps, and the elevated portion of my driveway with a much more substantial work of art. We are extremely happy with the results. Highly recommended."

Customers say: True professional

"A great company with a very experienced crew.. JD got us exactly what we wanted. They poured a 2ft by 70 plus foot wall and used the colored concrete to create an awesome texture that blew me away. We also had a 20 ft by 13ft patio poured, stamped, using colored concrete. Everything came out beyond our expectations . I would highly recommend this company that wants a quality job at a very competitive cost."

Small jobs welcome

"WNC Stone Works provided exceptional workmanship and customer service for a small landscaping project. James, the landscaper, assessed the area and suggested perennials that will thrive there. The promptness and professionalism of James (and Megan at the office) were much appreciated. The project was completed in just a few hours, exceeding our expectations and replacing an eyesore with a beautiful garden area to be enjoyed year after year."

"Rene, the owner of Mateoâ s has been working at my residence for over eight years. He and his men have put in rock retaining walls, tiered rock wall gardens, stone stairs, railroad tie and rock stairs, a full concrete driveway, and put in landscape plants and done lawn care as well as take care of drainage issues. They are meticulous, hardworking, honest, and have an exceptional eye for placement of rock or plants. Iâ ve referred them to so many homeowners who have also referred them. Everybody is happy."

Retaining Wall Installers questions, answered by experts

Installation typically takes 1-2 weeks, depending on the wall’s size and site conditions.

Yes, to build a retaining wall, a permit is required. Similarly, any repairs or modifications to an existing retaining wall require permits. If the planned wall measures higher than 4 feet, most municipalities require designs and permits come through a licensed engineer. In some locations, if the wall is shorter than 4 feet, a permit may not be required. For the requirements in your area, contact your local government.

Small retaining walls still require a foundation of some kind, typically a concrete footing. This helps to ensure the wall is structurally sound and prevents the ground from shifting over time, especially during those winter freeze/thaw cycles. The footing helps spread the weight of the wall and the load it carries over a larger area of the ground, thus assisting with stability. This is true of small retaining walls, larger rock garden walls, and the like.

Generally, a railroad tie retaining wall consisting of a single line of ties should be between 3 and 4 feet tall—and the height often tops out at around 6 feet. You can go taller, but you may need additional footings and reinforcements, including a second layer of railroad ties to support the added weight of the soil it’s holding back.

Proper design and construction prevent erosion and add structural stability to landscapes.
