"Had a bad experience with a big box contractor canceling me and needed some bathroom vanities installed now. Was referred to The Plumbing Firm for the work. Luckily a tech was available after 4:00"PM on a Friday and installed the vanities and all the plumbing. Then the next week I had a toilet flange needed replacement. Guys were there again. Up in Sparta, NC too. You guys are amazing. Keep up the good work"

"These folks were just great! Punctual, courteous and knowledgeable. They answered all my MANY questions. As they were pumping, they showed me water dripping into the tank which was from a leaking toilet. They impressed on me the importance of fixing the toilet immediately to avoid septic system failure. I never knew those little annoying drips could do such damage! Neat and tidy job! I would hire again without hesitation."

Toilets questions, answered by experts

The lifespan of a toilet can vary significantly. While the porcelain body itself can last up to 50 years or more with proper care, most plumbers suggest an average functional lifespan of 10 to 25 years, and many homeowners replace their toilets after about 20 years.

A toilet's longevity is influenced by factors like maintenance quality, hard water buildup, and damage to the finish. It's also important to note that internal components have much shorter lifespans than the bowl; for example, flappers may last only a few years, while fill valves can last around 10 years.

Even if an older toilet is still functional, consider upgrading to a high-efficiency model to save on water costs.

The order of your bathroom renovation should prevent damage to the completed work. Start with demolition and removing the old fixtures. Then, address structural repairs or water damage, if needed. Next, tackle the rough-in phase for plumbing and electrical work, install waterproofing, and work on wall treatments like tile or paint. Install your shower or bathtub, toilet, vanity, and sink. Flooring goes in after major fixtures but before the toilet. Lastly, install new lighting fixtures, mirrors, and other finishing touches as desired.

If you don’t replace a toilet flapper, your toilet tank will continue to empty and fill repeatedly, wasting water and running up your utility bills. Checking the flapper is a good first guess when dealing with a constantly running toilet. However, if these problems continue after replacing the flapper, you may need to hire a plumber to check and fix any bigger problems.

According to the Uniform Plumbing Code (UPC), the distance between your trap and the vent should be no more than 6 feet. For your vent to work properly, it needs to feed into the drain line within 6 feet of trapways that connect to it. Using this formula, you should be able to determine whether you will need multiple vent lines.

Installation costs range from $150 to $400, depending on toilet type and labor.
