"We selected Hardscapes in late July 2020, and they were able to do the work in January 2021. We knew upfront they had a waiting list. They built a 70 feet long retaining wall as the existing one was railroad ties and it was failing. The new wall looks excellent. It took about a week to do, and it was rough work since it had been raining consistently. I also requested them to redo our stairs in the same area. While I should be most impressed with the wall as it is fabulous, I really love the stairs. It was excellent work. The gentlemen working were all very nice and did a great job cleaning up every day. The neighbors even complimented on how thorough they were with clean up. The owner came to the site every day staying as long as was necessary each day managing the project and reviewing work that had been done and tweaking if he thought it was needed. He was also very easy to contact and responsive if he wasn't on site. The owner appears to take pride in his work which is a very positive attribute. While he was here since we were very happy with the end product we also had him quote us on some other possible projects. In short, while there is a decent wait time, it is definitely worth it."

"Aspect did a wonderful job bringing our vision to life! We needed a fence installed in our backyard two weeks before our wedding and Joe EXCEEDED our expectations. He was responsive, came out immediately for a free quote and scheduled the work to be completed within a week! His team came in and worked quickly and efficiently to give us a beautiful wooden fence in time for our big day! He even gave us tips on how to paint and take care of it. Two years later, the fence is still in great shape and we will be working with Aspect to complete our backyard vision- the deck is next! I highly recommend Aspect for all of your construction needs!"

"Our experience with Ram Wagle of Honest Landscape was what I expect from a professional: he was prompt in returning our calls, met all of our timelines (exceeded several) and left a clean work space. He helped us find an affordable solution for a steep berm in our front yard. The only small "minus" was the fill dirt that was used had many small round stones. We asked Ram to remove them at his convenience---his was response was "No problem" and they were gone within 24 hours."

Retaining Wall Installers questions, answered by experts

Railroad ties can be good for retaining walls, but it depends on the area. They have a desirable rustic look and are durable. The problem is they’re treated with creosote, a preservative the EPA says poses a risk to humans and wildlife. Over time, the preservative seeps out of the wood and into the ground. Many areas have banned the use of creosote-treated wood on residential properties. If your area does allow it, never use railroad ties near an edible garden or drinking water source. Instead, use wood that’s treated with an EPA-approved preservative or a wood-alternative composite material.

Most railroad tie retaining walls have a life span of 20 to 30 years, though you may need to replace your wall sooner if it’s repeatedly exposed to heavy rain, runoff, and excess moisture. Railroad ties are typically treated with creosote, which makes them much more durable than untreated wood. Though they last longer, they don’t last forever. For the most longevity, make sure your retaining wall has a sturdy base and steel reinforcements. You should also install drainage to direct water away from the wall.

Poured concrete is often the cheapest material for a retaining wall, costing around $6 to $8 per square foot. Other budget-friendly options include vinyl and landscaping timbers, which range from $10 to $15 per square foot; landscaping timbers are particularly well-suited for DIY projects. Untreated timber and railroad ties are a step up in price, starting at $15 to $25 per square foot. Natural stones can also be a cost-effective choice if you can source them from your own property, but they can be expensive to purchase. High-end materials like steel are typically the most expensive but offer superior durability and aesthetics.

If you don’t backfill a retaining wall—either at all or adequately enough—the wall won’t drain well, and water will be able to pass through it. Poor drainage will lead to a warped wall or a buildup of hydrostatic pressure, which can eventually collapse your retaining wall. If you have particularly sloped land, consult a structural engineer to ensure your hardscaping is adding value to your home.

The longevity of flood walls depends on how they were constructed, but most wood, gravel, and cement flood walls last 10 years. While aluminum flood walls may cost far more initially, they can be a good investment as they can last decades and will not be damaged by exposure to the elements.
