"We had damage from hurricane Helen to our private dirt road. We was quoted 80 thousand for the grading, ditching, piping, and gravel of about 1/4 of a mile long road and 5 thousand for about a 40 foot driveway regravel and a 20 foot driveway grade and gravel. The work was done and the first time it rained the road was dirt again. We call Tim he came out and brought more gravel for the worst stop but that was it. After having the road inspected by another company we was informed that the gravel should have been about 6 inches and packed down. The gravel is about 2 inches and was never packed. We now just 2 months after have dirt showing on the road and the driveways are full of grass. "

Many homeowners in warmer climates like this resilient, hearty grass because it can tolerate excessive heat and drought while developing into a lush lawn. Unlike other grasses, Bermuda grass grows and spreads quickly and can withstand excessive foot traffic. But whether Bermuda grass is good for lawns may depend on your geographic location, as this grass has a low tolerance for cooler temperatures, which causes it to go dormant and turn brown in the winter months.

In many cases, it’s a good idea to water St. Augustine grass daily to keep the soil moist and the grass thriving. It’s drought-tolerant, but it’s always best to keep it watered. However, it’s also important not to overwater, so skip watering during wetter conditions and aerate your lawn to promote proper soil drainage.

The first step is killing any current nutgrass plants, either through application of herbicides or sugar, by digging up the plants and rhizomes, or by using soil solarization. To discourage new nutgrass plants from forming, ensure proper landscape drainage and bring shade into areas of the lawn that are consistently damp.

When your sod is new, you should keep an eye on it to prevent dehydration. As new sod plants its roots into the soil beneath it, it can easily get dehydrated and start to turn brown. Keeping a consistent watering schedule for your new sod will help prevent this issue and will help it thrive as it roots into your yard.

Once your sod is about six weeks old, you can start to establish a regular lawn maintenance routine, complete with mowing, edging, and fertilizing.  

If your grass is stressed from being over-trimmed, try watering it heavily and then allowing it to recover for at least two weeks before mowing again. If you notice brown patches where the grass has died off because it’s too short, you should remove the dead grass and overseed the area. Leaving dead patches can invite weeds and other problems, so if you want a totally green lawn, getting rid of dead patches should include removing the dead sections before reseeding the area.
