"Straight Edge Painting Pros guys did awesome. It was exactly what I had imagined. Wes was very helpful in stating having the drywall ready for paint included priming and repairing imperfections which took an extra day. The guys took the time to make sure the drywall is perfect and ready for me to paint and also installed new baseboards."

"James and his team arrived on time. They gave us a reasonable estimate for the job. It took them 5 hours to fix the drywall in our living room. The finishing was clean and great. These guys are professionals and know what they are doing."

"Highly recommend. First the quote: Nick arrived on time, evaluated & quickly wrote up a quote explaining costs & labor. It was a fair price. What I particularly liked was the absence of a hard sell. I'd gotten 3 previous quotes & was taken aback by the oddly aggressive 'sell' (like: "you get a 10% discount if you sign right now!") So the others just felt 'off' & Nick with NBC Restoration seemed fair and sincere. Nick and his team (brother and daughter) arrived on time and did the work that was promised without any drama. Nick also kindly fixed my front storm door without asking for payment. I will be hiring them again soon to repair columns on my front porch. My dad and uncles did construction work. This experience very much reminded me of the way my family used to do business - no nonsense, respectful & professional."

"Another great job by Dave from his team Cransten Handyman and Remodeling, we had a ceiling leak that had done some damage in our garage they removed all the molded things, took out the damage, replaced insulation, put up new drywall, and painted and all looks great again. I am very satisfied with their work, a very knowledgeable team. I recommend this company for having a professional worker!"

Drywall questions, answered by experts

Yes, you can speed up the time it takes for plaster to dry, but it's important to do so carefully to avoid issues like cracking or crumbling. Proper ventilation is key; open a window or use a fan to circulate air in the room. Heat can also accelerate drying, but be cautious, as too much heat can cause the plaster to dry too quickly and crack. Check the plaster's packaging for the recommended drying temperature and set the room's thermostat accordingly. While managing humidity is important, avoid using a dehumidifier, which can remove moisture too aggressively and result in crumbly plaster.

You should do a little bit of sanding between adding coats of mud. Knock down any ridges or significantly imperfect areas through sanding, which should help you apply the next coat of mud smoothly. If your first coat of mud is pretty smooth after it dries, a quick sanding is all you’ll need. Don’t forget to wipe away any dust after each sanding process.

How you hang the drywall can affect the finishing process. It's often easier to finish horizontal drywall panels, as the seams run across the wall rather than up and down. Standard drywall panels are 48 inches wide, so the seam is easy to reach without bending down or stretching your arms.

While you can put new drywall over old drywall, it’s not always the best option. In some cases, drywalling over drywall can make it harder to find wires and pipes behind your walls and conceal more serious problems with your walls. It can also make the room smaller. On the plus side, putting drywall over drywall can improve soundproofing and insulation. Plus, it’s often less expensive than tearing down and adding new drywall.

The easiest way to tell if a wall is load bearing is to check if it’s an exterior wall or if it runs perpendicular to the joists above and below it (or parallel to beams). Exterior walls are almost always load-bearing, and walls that run under beams or parallel to them are also usually load-bearing. There are exceptions to these rules, and walls that don’t fit into these categories can still be load-bearing. If you’re unsure, hire a structural engineer to look at your home to assess whether or not the wall is structural.
