He was friendly and professional and knew exactly what needed to be done. The work was scheduled to be done within 2 days. On the day of the project Evan was at my house when he said he would be there and the project was completed very quickly. It was a difficult job with lots of tree roots that he had to cut and remove before he could put the sidewalks in. We are very pleased with the finished sidewalks and highly recommend this company. "Original install was fine. Unfortunately after 4 years the compressor went bad. We had a written 5 year warranty through him since it was an almost new used unit. We were told that the compressor was covered but not the refrigerant which was going to be close to $1,000 dollars. He supposedly had it ordered. Checked back a week or so later, and he said he would look into it. That was the last correspondence. He would not answer or return phone calls. Now we get to pay someone over $3,000 to repair it. Not recommended."

Although scheduled through the holiday, James made time for a quick look, then found & helped me block the squirrel's access. And, because he'd be returning to sweep the chimney, he didn't even charge for that visit. What a wonderful surprise! Our later chimney sweep was thoroughly & cleanly done w/o soot getting into the house. This is a wonderful, successful family business that I'll definitely use again."

The cost of repairing a gas leak depends on the type of leak, its severity, and how difficult it is for the repair technician to reach it. Some of the most common gas line repair costs, on average, include:

  • Cap a gas line: $75–$150

  • Repair gas leak: $120–$5,000

While some building codes allow galvanized pipe for natural gas, it shouldn’t be used for propane. Propane can cause the pipe to wear down, leading to dangerous leaks. Instead of galvanized piping for propane, you should consider coated copper, black iron, or corrugated stainless steel tubing (CSST). For underground propane line installation, you can use polyethylene (PE).

Capping a gas line costs approximately $125. The final price varies from $75 and $150 depending on your contractor’s hourly rate. To completely remove a gas line and cap it at the base can cost up to $250. Most contractors will charge a flat fee instead of by the hour since capping is often part of a larger project.

Even though their jobs sound similar—both professions work on pipes—a plumber and pipefitter actually have very different jobs, and pipefitting isn’t considered plumbing. Pipefitting is done in commercial and industrial buildings and factories, and the pipes carry gas, chemicals, acid, and other potentially hazardous substances. Pipefitters often work in intense conditions while plumbers may work in lower-pressure environments.

The best sealant for gas pipes is usually a pipe joint compound, or pipe dope. It creates a durable, leak-proof seal that is resistant to high pressure and vibrations, and it doesn’t break down like tape can. Yellow Teflon tape, or PTFE tape, can also be a good option and is a safe and reliable sealant for gas pipes when you or a pro apply it correctly.
