"One lock had become so kludged that the latch wouldn't come out, and the door wouldn't even stay shut. We also had, for a variety of reasons, some mismatched locks on other doors. The folks at Circle City Lock and Key contacted me quickly after I submitted my request through Angie's List, were extremely flexible in arranging a visit, and arrived on time. My wife met with them, so I relay only what she said, but she reported that they were extremely helpful, that they explained the problem with the lock / latch, and even suggested a product for preventative maintenance. They worked on re-keying all the locks so the same key would work on all of them, which was a bit more of a challenge than I had realized (I was confused about which locks various keys worked on, had passed my misunderstanding on to my wife, and she had then passed that on to the Circle City folks). She was very happy and impressed with the time and care they spent on our job, and we both were pleasantly surprised by the charge. I would strongly recommend them to anyone in need of locksmith services."

Locksmiths questions, answered by experts

Smart door locks are safe to use and are usually considered safer than traditional locks with keys. While all electronic devices can be hacked, that doesn’t happen nearly as frequently in real life as people may think. You can also invest in multiple locks of different types for enhanced security so you don’t rely solely on one smart lock.

A smart lock is a variation of a traditional lock, and since it uses similar locking mechanisms, it’s technically not any safer. The difference is that a smart lock requires a login instead of a physical key. Some smart locks have added safety features, like shutting down after too many attempts with the wrong code. Some smart locks are considered harder to pick than traditional locks, which can further deter intruders.

The most secure lock for a front door is typically a deadbolt. There are many types of deadbolts to choose from, the most basic of which is the standard single-cylinder deadbolt. This is the lock you find installed on most front doors. For added security, you could go with a double-cylinder deadbolt, which requires a key to operate the lock from both the outside and the inside.

Thieves can open almost anything with enough time and the right tools, but they also prefer easy targets that are unlikely to get them caught. Forcing open gates is loud and difficult, and to be able to open one electronically requires extensive knowledge of the system, which most thieves don't have. Electric and other security gates are great deterrents because the thief will move to an easier target. If the thief is determined to enter your property, they will most likely find a different entrance point.

If you don’t have your original key, the easiest way to obtain a copy is to call a locksmith. For house keys, your locksmith has several options for configuring a new key:

  • They can input a lock’s identification code into a database to obtain key-cutting instructions.

  • They could analyze the lock cylinder to determine how to cut a new key.

  • They can create an impression of the lock cylinder from which to cut a new key.
