A floating slab is a single chunk of concrete that sits directly on flat soil, while a monolithic slab is a single piece of concrete that includes built-in footings that reach several feet below where the majority of the slab sits. Monolithic slabs provide more support, so they’re suitable for home construction, whereas floating slabs get minimal support from the soil directly below and are more common under sheds and detached garages.

Newly poured concrete is prone to small, fine cracks within the first 30 days of installation, but most noticeable cracks will disappear within that time frame. If a crack is greater than 1 inch, consider contacting the person who installed your wall to inspect the job.  

Thicker concrete is less likely to crack due to extreme weather changes. At a minimum, concrete slabs should be at least 4 inches, but if you’re worried about the concrete cracking under the weight of heavy machinery or from the freeze-thaw patterns of your climate, you should use even thicker concrete. Yes, you can remove concrete by hand with a sledgehammer if the concrete is no more than 4 inches thick. Most patios and sidewalks fit into this category.
