"When we were shopping for a roof, we knew we wanted metal, but we were afraid the cost would be too prohibitive. We needed someone to educate us on the benefits of metal, and to explain how we were getting more for our money than we would with asphalt shingles. We also wanted to see what the metal roofing material looked like up close. Weather Guard was the only metal roofing company we found that had an actual showroom, so we went there one Friday afternoon. We spent a couple of hours with one of the owners in the showroom learning about the different types of metal roofs (prior to this we didn't know there was anything other than rib panels) and looking at pictures of the roofs of homes and businesses they had done. Despite the fact it was a Friday afternoon, a time when you may think they would have been eager for us to leave (especially since we made it clear we were not ready to purchase), we did not feel rushed or pressured. When we got home from the showroom we read the reviews of this company on Angie's List. We were quite surprised, frankly, because the experience we'd just had did not match the negative experiences others wrote about on this site. We discussed the pros and cons, and spoke with a friend in the building industry to get his input. This was a huge purchase for us and we had many concerns, not the least of which was cost. We came up with a price that we needed in order to proceed with metal, and we decided to see if Weather Guard could meet that price. The same gentlemen who'd shown us around the showroom came out the next weekend. The roof was measured and we decided which materials we wanted to use. We were told that they actually had some shake in the color that we wanted in the warehouse, so that would not need to be ordered. The price we were quoted was the actual price, and not an estimate. We liked that because it meant there were no hidden costs lurking at the end of the project. We decided to use Weather Guard because the price was, we thought, very reasonable for what we were getting, and it was a little less expensive than we'd anticipated. They did arrange financing for us, but we opted to use our bank instead. There was no problem with this whatsoever. They started the job a couple of weeks after that. They worked quickly and the job would have been completed within two days had they not run out of the shake material, the same material they said they had in their warehouse. Apparently there was not enough to complete our job. It had to be ordered and it took a couple of weeks more before they had it and could finish the job. Had it been rainy we would have been a lot more aggravated about this than we were, but the weather was good and we didn't need to worry about leaks. One of the things Weather Guard takes pride in is their clean up, but we would have to give them a "C" in this area. We were picking up nails out of our driveway for weeks after the job was complete, and we've found pieces of plastic in the bushes closest to the house. The largest piece of debris we found was a board approximately two feet long that had fallen into one of the bushes; to be fair, it was not clearly visible and we only found it when we were pruning the bushes. I would definitely recommend Weather Guard to anyone in the market for a metal roof. The individuals we dealt with were professional and respectful. The metal roof is more expensive than a traditional asphalt shingle roof, but for us, the benefits of metal (long lasting, sturdy, attractive) made it the right decision."

Doors questions, answered by experts

Yes, you can clean door hinges with vinegar. The cleaner your door hinges are, the less likely they are to cause that annoying squeaking sound. Simply fill a container with equal parts water and vinegar, dip a microfiber cloth in the mixture, and use it to clean the hinges. You can do this while the hinges are connected or remove them, and wash them piece by piece.

When hanging a door frame, it’s recommended that you use screws, not nails. Screws are more secure, easier to tighten, and easier to remove if you need to adjust the frame. On average, the cost to replace a door frame is about $400, but you can save on labor costs if you’re confident in your ability to DIY the project.

You can often fit a new door slab into an old frame as long as the frame’s in decent shape. The frame needs to be solid, square, and free of warping or rot. The new door has to match the old one in width, height, and thickness, and the hinge and knob placements need to line up or be adjusted carefully. However, if your frame is damaged, swapping just the door won’t cut it. In that case, replacing the entire unit would be the best move for a smooth, secure installation.

Yes, new steel doors add value to your home. They improve curb appeal, increase home security, and make your home more energy-efficient. High-quality steel doors are durable, low-maintenance, and insulate well against hot and cold temperatures. Potential buyers often appreciate the added protection and aesthetic upgrade, so new steel doors can help your home stand out and increase its resale value.

To maintain a storm door's functionality and appearance, you should regularly clean the glass and frames, lubricate the hinges and other moving parts, and inspect the seals for any signs of wear.
