"Colorfx Custom Coatings of Oxford did a very good paint job. The bill for the front door, the entry trim and some trim on a small screened in porch was $1391. I urge that prospective customers insist on best business practices — get a written estimate up front on official letterhead that includes precise details of labor costs and all materials. Bryan Mackey stated that he charges $65 an hour. Be sure to clarify ahead of time whether the written estimate is a flexible ballpark figure or a bottom line guaranteed price for labor. Insist ahead of time on receiving current receipts for all materials and keep track of actual hours worked on the job site."

Cabinet Refacing and Refinishing questions, answered by experts

No. Once you apply refinishing oil, it will continue to seep into the wood, making it difficult or impossible to refinish over top of it. Since the product contains an oil that’s meant to penetrate existing finishes, almost anything you put on top of it will bring the previous layer of stain with it. If you plan to refinish your cabinets more than once, it’s a good idea to go with the traditional method of sanding before applying a new finish to the surface.

A few things can indicate cabinet refinishing is a good idea, but the most obvious is any sign of water or steam damage. If the existing paint on your cabinets starts to bubble or flake, it could indicate that water or humidity from cooking or surrounding plumbing fixtures or showers is causing damage. Refinishing can add a protective layer to prevent further issues. You should also consider refinishing every eight to ten years, if your cabinet color or finish is outdated, or if you have scratches or scuffs on the faces.

Cabinet refinishing takes an average of two to three days. The process includes setting up and removing cabinet doors, drawers, and hardware, followed by cleaning, stripping, and sanding cabinets. You or your pro will have to address issues like chips, stains, or splits before applying paint or stain. Then the final stage includes painting or staining, reassembling cabinets, and cleaning up.

It can take as little as 30 to 60 minutes for wood filler to dry, but some products take up to four hours. Always read labels to ensure you're following the manufacturer’s instructions. Water-based wood fillers typically take longer to dry than oil-based or epoxy-wood fillers, especially when applied to large areas or deep cracks. Wood putty won’t dry completely, remaining slightly pliable.

Sealing a cabinet after staining is optional but recommended for best results. Wood sealer keeps out moisture, which protects against scratches, warping, chipping, discoloration, and mildew. Sealer not only preserves the appearance of wood furniture but, like staining, enhances it by accentuating the wood’s natural color and grain.
