Small jobs welcome

"What a great experience and quality service I received from West County Insulation! From the initial visit to offer a quote through completion of installation, the staff were respectful, knowledgeable, friendly, and efficient. They even reduced the charge after noticing an unnecessary service on the estimate that could only be verified when they took out the old insulation. I would have never known, but appreciate that kind of integrity. I recommend them highly!"

"Chris with St. Louis Insulation went above and beyond, he dispatched Brian out to inspect our insulation as we thought it was getting wet on the same day we called. Ultimately it was determined we did not have an issue. If an issue ever does come up we will be calling Chris with St. Louis Insulation. Thanks, Russ"

"First : I was concerned with the negative reviews .So i contacted them and asked for an explanation ..I was satisfied with what they had to say ..and I thought their honesty was refreshing
My electric bills were 2 times more than my neighbors
2) i scheduled a home assessment .. and even though we had a schedule change communictaion was always good
3) after assessment they suggested $5000 plus in upgrades , but gave no pressure to use their service ..I researched the cost of DYI vs. using them and consulted with Ameren to advise ..I decided Peterson was about 25% more than doing the job myself and was satisfied that was worth not doing the job myself
4) but I saved a little by doing the easiest job myself ...Insulating  my open basement rim joists
5) The workers were quick /clean/courteous/and professional ...THEY CLEANED AFTER THEMSELVES !!!
6) Work was complete and I am 100% satisfied
I have waited a few months to see if my energy costs went down (before reviewing) ... It is hard to accurately quantify savings ...but in comparison to neighbors it seems to have a 35-40% reduction in electric use during warmer months ...That said I would still have a few years to break even with  cost of insulation ...BUT the comfort level in our house was well worth the costs ..We used to have a warm upstairs and used a a/c window unit to keep up ..We no longer need window a/c and everyone is happier and house temps are more moderate on each level
Final assessment : It was expensive but well worth it and Peterson was a very good provider of advise and services

"

I bought a chimney sweep big deal and it went well. It cost more than the price of the big deal due to the repairs they made. The guys that did it were just a little bit weird. They were kind of socially awkward. They had some difficulties communicating.

"Al and his partner were setup and working within 10 minutes of getting to our house. What I appreciate about Al is that he notices little things that need to be done and just does them (recaulking the bathtub when he was working in the bathroom, using left over concrete patch from the foundation to fill in a spot in the driveway that was broken) - simple stuff that adds little or nothing to the bill but tells me he's paying attention and that he cares. I have had Al work on several projects now, and to be honest, I don't even bother calling anyone else.

"We were in the depths of nesting when we realized we were running out of time to paint the nursery before our first baby arrived. We live in an older house, so we were quite concerned about lead safety as well as minimizing paint fume exposure for my wife and newborn. We realized we needed to work with a professional who could take all of this into account and act quickly to make sure the room was ready in time. Kenneth was very accommodating to us. I'm confident we were challenging to work with given the circumstances, but he never made us feel that way. He took our concerns seriously and talked us through a variety of options to find something that worked for us. He was kind, responsive, and moved quickly to keep us on schedule. When we had notes or changes, he was quick to address them. There were a few aspects of the finish that weren't as polished as we hoped, but overall he was great to work with. The project was completed on time, and we were grateful to have his help during such a stressful moment."

Insulation questions, answered by experts

Mineral wool has an excellent life expectancy of up to 50 years, provided it's kept dry and free of pests. Compared to fiberglass, with a life span of 20 to 30 years, mineral wool stacks up well for long-term cost savings. Sheep wool maintains a similar life span to fiberglass, while estimates for hemp wool insulation life expectancies are all over the board, ranging anywhere from 20 to 100 years.

You should not use spray foam insulation in several specific areas. Avoid applying it in spaces exposed to high temperatures, such as near electrical boxes or recessed lighting, unless the foam is specifically rated for such use. Applying foam near electrical boxes can damage the wiring, and using it too close to lightboxes or recessed lights creates a potential fire hazard. Additionally, do not use spray foam in areas prone to shifting or movement, as this can lead to cracks and gaps in the insulation. Finally, open-cell foam is unsuitable for use below ground or in areas exposed to moisture because it can absorb water, which compromises its insulating effectiveness.

Rigid foam board insulation is one of the safest insulation materials for basement walls. The panels offer a moisture barrier to prevent mold and mildew build-up. At the same time, this material is also fire-resistant, so you don’t have to worry as much about a fire breaking out as you would with spray foam insulation.

The R-value is a rating that measures an insulation's thermal resistance—in other words, how well it insulates. A higher R-value provides more protection for your pipes, and all pipe insulation materials should have an R-value listed on the product description or label. Each insulation type has its own R-value, which typically falls between one and five for most pipe insulation. When making a selection, Energy.gov recommends choosing a pipe wrap that is at least one inch thick, and the International Code Council (ICC) suggests choosing a material with an R-value of at least 3.

EIFS (Exterior Insulation and Finish System) siding can last from 20 to 60 years, with some properly maintained systems lasting even longer. The exact lifespan depends heavily on several factors, most notably the quality of the initial installation and the consistency of maintenance.

Factors that can shorten the life of EIFS include:

  • Improper or poor-quality installation

  • Moisture intrusion

  • Damage from high winds, storms, or hail

  • Damaged flashing and sealant

  • Lack of regular maintenance and unfixed damage

To maximize the lifespan of your EIFS, it is crucial to hire an experienced and qualified professional for the installation. Additionally, regular maintenance—such as cleaning, repairing small cracks or blisters, and having the system professionally inspected—will help identify and resolve issues quickly, preventing long-term damage.
