"Loy replaced a backdoor in our older home. He worked long and hard to make sure the doors were squarely hung, opened and closed smoothly and fit perfectly. He finished the job in one day. He was very pleasant to work with, and I would hire him again."

"We replaced all the original windows in our home (19).  From beginning to end, Melissa was available to answer questions.  We settled on the Heartland brand and are very pleased with the results.  The work was done quickly with little interruption to our routine.  Melissa also connected us with  energy rebate programs. In doing do, we saved even more money that allowed us to insulate the attic and get credit on gas and electric bills.  The house is warmer this winter and the furnace is not running as much as it has in the past.  The same was true for the summer--a cooler house with less energy.  In addition to the windows, we also had Anderson exterior doors installed.  The style allows a quick method to getting fresh air into the house, a feature we enjoy with the vagaries of Kansas City weather.

Doors questions, answered by experts

You can install many types of interior doors without a frame as long as the door is prehung or there is already an existing door in the opening. If the opening has never had a door installed, you will need to install a frame with the door. Consult a professional door installer to inspect the opening to determine whether or not it’s possible to place a door there without a frame.

A front door lasts between 20 and 100 years, or an average of 30 years. How long it lasts depends on the type of material, the environment, and how well you maintain it. A door with coverage over it will last longer than one exposed to the elements. Using high-quality paint or sealants can also help extend the life of your front door. Wood front doors tend to have shorter lifespans than other materials.

Burglars are kept away from would-be targets for a number of reasons, but of 400 incarcerated burglars interviewed, the most cited reason they’d avoid a property is if there are people inside, followed by seeing officers nearby. Alarms, lights, and noises inside the house can also deter criminals from approaching.

Ideally, a gate should be able to swing both in and out. However, if it can only open in one direction, it is generally best for it to swing inward. This is often the safest option, especially for deck gates near steps, as you'll want the gate to swing away from the stairs. An inward swing also prevents the gate from opening into a public space, like a sidewalk, and can be more convenient when carrying heavy items like a wheelbarrow into a garden.

There are exceptions, however. The layout of your property may require a different approach. For example, if your property is on a slope, the gate may not be able to swing inward. You should also ensure the gate can open fully without colliding with any objects or blocking access to other areas. For a backyard garden gate where public access isn't a concern, the direction it swings is largely a matter of personal preference. Finally, always check your local building codes, as they may have specific requirements for which way a gate must swing.

On average, sliding glass patio doors can last between 20 and 30 years. Their actual lifespan depends on several factors, including proper installation, frequency of use, and regular maintenance of the sliding components. While this is the typical range, minor problems and the need for occasional repairs or part replacements can still occur. Addressing issues as soon as they arise and performing regular maintenance will help extend the door's life. If the door is older and requires frequent or significant repairs, it may be more cost-effective to replace the entire unit.
