Small jobs welcome

Hello, I am a recently retired educator and coach. I learned building trades from my father as a child and worked with him in construction for 8 years building houses from the ground up including plumbing, wiring, concrete, cabinetry, etc. from framing to finish. I have completed my own additions, remodeling, and repairs for the last 30 years. I'm a detail oriented perfectionist that enjoys working with my hands and providing a quality, reasonably priced service.

"Dakota replaced some old and rotted deck boards for us. He was extremely responsive calling me back within minutes of my inquiry. His estimated cost for the work was on-target and fair. He advised me on how to order the deck boards from a local store and picked them up for me. Two days after meeting with him to go over the job he completed the work like he stated. I'd definitely recommend Dakota to neighbors and other people I know."

"Steve has worked for me for 15 years at two different homes. There really isnâ t a proper category on this site that describes his work. I consider him my contractor. Heâ s done small projects like replacing a faucet and large ones. He re-sided my house last year and built fences at both homes. He also built a deck and installed a tornado shelter at my current home. Steve does high quality work at a fair price. If he has a way to hold the cost down that doesnâ t impact the quality he always explains what he wants to do. Heâ s saved me a lot over the years. Iâ ve also referred him to friends who hired him for their projects. If you want someone who shows up when he says he will, works a full day and doesnâ t overcharge for his work, Steve at Lake Home Repair is your guy."

Deck Maintenance questions, answered by experts

As with patios, there are many types of deck choices to choose from to add personalization to your home. Some common deck options include:

  • Attached decks are anchored to the home and include simple ground-level options or multi-level structures with stairways and separate landings.

  • Detached island decks are not attached to the home; they’re a freestanding structure in the yard.

  • Wraparound decks connect the back of the house with at least one other side and often are built with railings for safety.

  • Multi-level decks connect your deck through varying levels of elevation, featuring landings that are attached to stairs.

Building a deck without a permit could lead to fines for both the homeowner and the contractor. The exact penalties will depend on your state and municipal building laws. You might also be required to remove the deck and apply for a permit before you can build another. While it might be tempting to skip the permit to save a few bucks, it’ll cost you much more if you’re caught.

Yes, you can build a deck over your outdoor HVAC unit, but you need to leave at least 5 feet of vertical clearance above the unit. If you don’t want your deck to be that high off the ground, you could build a floating deck in another part of your yard—again, as long as you leave at least 4 feet of horizontal space between the deck and your AC unit.

Yes, using sustainable materials and recycled composites offer green solutions.

Yes, it’s definitely possible to build a pergola on an existing deck. All you need to do is attach the pergola support beams to the deck’s joists and build up from there. Beware that mistakes can damage your deck, so if you’re at all unsure of the process, play it safe and hire a pro for your custom build.
