While you may have heard people use millwork and carpentry interchangeably, they aren’t the same. Millwork is a type of carpentry, which means that carpentry isn’t always millwork. There should be at least 30 inches of space between the top of the stove, whether gas or electric, and the bottom of any upper cabinets. This typically provides enough clearance to prevent heat damage and meet most building code requirements. If you’re installing a range hood, follow the manufacturer’s guidelines. It may require even more space.

You can use either handles or knobs on upper cabinets—go with what you like best. Pulls can sometimes make hard-to-reach upper cabinets easier to open, which is why it’s common to see kitchens that have handles on upper cabinets and knobs on drawers and base cabinets. But it’s also common to use knobs on doors and pulls on drawers. Let your aesthetics, budget, and practical considerations about how you use your cabinets dictate your decision.
