I am a Journeyman Union Carpenter by trade but after 15 years left it to pursue other things. I have had rental properties and done hundreds of property rehabs and remodels over the years. I have a working knowledge of plumbing and electrical and I take pride in my work. I also rehab and refinish antique wood furniture and build custom furniture out of old wood and recycled materials. No job is too small and I enjoy meeting all the people that this kind of work leads me too.

Outdoor Kitchens questions, answered by experts

In most cases, you will need building permits for an outdoor kitchen. Generally speaking, you’ll need building permits for anything with a permanent foundation, and since outdoor kitchens typically require a concrete foundation, they demand building permits. Outdoor kitchen permits usually cost between $250 and $500, but you could pay as much as $2,000 for larger or more involved kitchens. You might also need separate permits to run utility lines to your kitchen, which could add an additional $75 to $200 to your installation cost.

The average cost of an outdoor kitchen is around $15,500. However, since outdoor kitchens are highly customizable, you could spend anywhere from $5,000 to over $50,000 for your setup. Some important factors that can affect your pricing include the size of the kitchen, the materials you use—specifically for the countertop—the type of grill you want, and any add-on products you want coupled with your installation.

The best height for a pizza oven is one that allows the user to easily see what’s going on inside and comfortably place pies without having to crouch over. In general, that means the opening should be between 36 and 48 inches off the ground. By contrast, the height of the dome is totally up to your preference, because different heights create different results. Shorter domes are better for creating Neapolitan-style pies, whereas taller domes are ideal for NY-style recipes.

In general, the best types of wood for outdoor kitchens are naturally resistant to elements like water and heat and the damage they impart, like fading and mold or mildew development. For the best results, opt for teak, mahogany, and oak, and make sure they're pressure-treated for extra protection.

Outdoor kitchens can quickly get expensive, but there are a few things you can do to help keep costs down, including the following:

  • You can build on an existing patio to reduce the cost of a new foundation.

  • Opt out of a sink and stick with a built-in propane or charcoal grill to save on utility line installation costs.

  • You can tackle the parts of the project that are DIYable, like finishing cabinets, installing fixtures, and building seating.

  • Keep your kitchen small and make a big impact with proper planning and upgrading the essential components instead.
