"The guys came out to look at the job and give me a quote. I got the quote, but apparently it didn’t cover the whole scope of the work. There were add-Ons that I thought would’ve been included in the original fees. I don’t know about asphalt work, but I do know quality work, and I felt it was lacking. The guys did communicate with me and tried to work with me and the project. In all fairness, my driveway was is disrepair and it does look better."

"Due to the wet spring weather the planned start date slipped a little but then I had to move it because of business travel. Once they got started, everything went great. They graded and leveled the old gravel driveway that had washed due to the heavy spring rains. Then applied 2 layers of chip seal and the new driveway looks great. I was originally planning to just have it graded and re-graveled but after talking with Jerome, decided it would be worth the extra cost to do the chip seal and it was.
Jerome, Ollie and the rest of the crew were very professional and polite.

"Jeff was very prompt, both in responding to my inquiries and getting the work done! He was very easy to talk with and to communicate with and understand what work was needed to accomplish and complete the job. Jeff gave an estimate on what the job would take and he was spot on. After inspecting the job at the time of completion, it was an excellent job. I would recommend his services to everyone!"

"Excellent work. Were on the job very timely. After paving, sprayed the blacktop, but were not careful enough,,,, also sprayed bricks by driveway and got some on the side of my house. The workers were awesome. When I called due to a small problem, (not the overspray) they were back the next day and fixed it!"

Asphalt Driveways questions, answered by experts

Cobblestone is just one of many driveway materials. Other, more economical, albeit less elaborate options include concrete, asphalt, and gravel.

If you want a material that most closely resembles cobblestone, your best option is bricks or pavers. Both cost anywhere from $10 to $50 per square foot and can be laid in all kinds of patterns. Depending on the type of paver you choose, you can also get a good bang for your buck by investing in durable natural stone.

The choice between asphalt and concrete depends on your priorities, budget, and climate.

Concrete is generally more durable, lasting up to 50 years with minimal upkeep, and offers more customization options like staining and stamping, which can add more to a home's value. However, it is more expensive upfront and can be prone to cracking in cold climates where water can freeze and expand.

Asphalt is typically cheaper and quicker to install and is easier to repair. It performs better in colder climates. However, it requires more maintenance, including regular resealing, has a shorter lifespan, and can get hot and sticky in intense sunlight.

Ultimately, if durability and long-term value are key, concrete is often the better choice. If upfront cost and performance in cold weather are more important, asphalt may be preferable.

Many asphalt companies have experience with tar and chip paving, but not all. The process is unique enough—and not incredibly common enough—that you may have to look around for a tar and chip specialist. However, speaking with a driveway company is a great place to start, especially if they have experience with multiple materials.

Asphalt driveways last anywhere from 15 to 30 years, but if you don’t stay on top of repairs, you may find yourself spending extra to replace your driveway before its typical lifespan. Stay on top of repairing cracks and potholes by routinely inspecting your driveway once or twice a year. It’s a good idea to pressure wash your asphalt driveway at least once a year to keep it clean. Apply a sealer every one to five years, based on your climate.

The answer to whether or not you need to get a permit before you start your driveway can vary widely based on local ordinances and the scope of your driveway ideas. In most urban and suburban areas, a permit is needed before building a new driveway to ensure that a homeowner is using safe materials and proper drainage practices while designing and constructing a new driveway. In some rural areas, a homeowner may not be required to apply for a permit. When building a new driveway on your own, always check with your local building department to see if you need to request a permit. When hiring a driveway contractor, verify that the right permits are being used before driveway construction begins.
