"The guys came out to look at the job and give me a quote. I got the quote, but apparently it didn’t cover the whole scope of the work. There were add-Ons that I thought would’ve been included in the original fees. I don’t know about asphalt work, but I do know quality work, and I felt it was lacking. The guys did communicate with me and tried to work with me and the project. In all fairness, my driveway was is disrepair and it does look better."

"I think Jerome and Ollie are great people. They are aware I was (and am) disappointed in the finished look of the driveway. My reason is because they put a much thinner layer of chip stone on the back part of the driveway vs the front. There are still spots so thin (lacking chip) that the tar is clearly visible. Plus, there is a noticeable drop-off at the front to back transition point on the circle which looks bad (less than professional) in my opinion. When I pointed out my concerns and asked them to remedy the matter, they declined to do so, However, on a positive note, the driveway, as is, seems to be holding up well since it was installed 2 years ago. It is serving its purpose, and we like it better than the former road base driveway. It just did not (and does not) look like a quality finished product. I believe ATX will do a good job for any client per the agreed contract. My recommendation to anyone planning to put in a chip-seal drive is to clearly specify everything, such as, desired driveway thickness, or the number of layers to be done, etc.. Also, be aware that grass & weeds will still grow through such a driveway, which is nature, and not the fault of the contractor. Be prepared to invest in lots of roundup and a good pump sprayer."

Asphalt Driveways questions, answered by experts

The dimensions of a driveway apron vary based on local building codes, the width of your driveway, and the distance between the driveway and the road. On average, aprons range from 12 to 24 feet wide and 8 to 18 feet long. Typically, the end of the apron connected to the driveway matches its width—such as 10 to 12 feet for a single-car driveway—while the end at the street flares out to allow cars to turn in and out more easily. In some areas, you may not be responsible for the portion of the apron that extends beyond the sidewalk, but this depends on local laws.

Regular cleaning, sealing, and timely repair of cracks help maintain its condition.

Costs range from $3 to $7 per square foot, depending on the area size and project scope.

Since it has a smoother surface using a mixture of finer rock and sand, 41A tends to be the best asphalt grade for a driveway, especially for residential driveways. Other options are available, but more homeowners choose 41A for a smoother asphalt driveway. Talk with your asphalt driveway professional for recommendations of the best grade for your specific driveway.

The material that’s best for your private road depends on your property, the climate in your area, and your personal preferences. Gravel is an affordable option, but some homeowners don’t like how it looks. It can be a pain to remove snow from, and it requires more ongoing maintenance than asphalt or concrete. However, while these other options require less maintenance and make snow removal a breeze, they’re more expensive and will need repairs from time to time. Ultimately, you’ll have to choose the road material that suits you and your property best.
