"There were no problems other than some delays getting started and during the work at least in part due to rain. They laid a new foundation for the bricks, rebuilt the wall under the window and painted it. In a separate project they removed the old side walk and laid a wider new one. They reseeded the grass along the walk that had been disturbed and cleaned up after themselves. Overall pleased with the work and would hire again."

"Great! Jon-Paul and Brian were great to work with. They were extremely knowledgeable regarding hail damage and insurance claims. Both were very helpful with this process. The workers were very hard working young men. Very polite and professional. Before they started tearing the roof off, they covered both decks to protect our patio furniture. After the job was completed, they cleaned up everything. Looked awesome! My husband was also very happy with the job they did with the flashing around the fire place. Our house is old (>110 years) and while it's not large, the roof is complicated with multiple gables and chimneys. We responded to a cold call from this company regarding their drive-by observation that we needed roof repair.  What they didn't know is that we were ready to do the whole thing, not just patch up a spot or two, and so we asked them for an estimate for the whole job.  The work was to remove the old roof and replace it, and to re-roof a covered porch area that required fashioning a slope for drainage where there was none, and removing and patching areas where ornamental woodwork had been added years ago by a previous owner.  They were responsive, courteous and punctual, and entirely professional.  The work crewmen were courteous and professional.  The job took a little longer than they had predicted, but we did not care about that and just wanted a good job done, which we feel we received.  We would happily work with them again."

While many gate hinges are often made of extremely durable materials, such as galvanized steel, they can wear out after many years. How quickly they wear out also depends on how much use they’ve endured. It’s also possible for the hinge screws to fall out, which weakens the hinge. Once a hinge wears out, it’s time for a replacement so your gate doesn’t start sagging.

Ideally, a gate should be able to swing both in and out. However, if it can only open in one direction, it is generally best for it to swing inward. This is often the safest option, especially for deck gates near steps, as you'll want the gate to swing away from the stairs. An inward swing also prevents the gate from opening into a public space, like a sidewalk, and can be more convenient when carrying heavy items like a wheelbarrow into a garden.

There are exceptions, however. The layout of your property may require a different approach. For example, if your property is on a slope, the gate may not be able to swing inward. You should also ensure the gate can open fully without colliding with any objects or blocking access to other areas. For a backyard garden gate where public access isn't a concern, the direction it swings is largely a matter of personal preference. Finally, always check your local building codes, as they may have specific requirements for which way a gate must swing.

In most cases, you will need a permit to install a new driveway or property gate. An exception might be if you are simply replacing an existing gate. Before issuing a permit, your local municipality may require a site plan or survey to verify property lines and prevent encroachment on a neighbor's property. Permits for a gate typically cost under $100. Be aware that corner properties may have additional restrictions on gate height or style. It's wise to confirm permit requirements with your local building department or your gate installation company, which can usually handle the entire permitting process for you.

While it is possible to install a manual gate yourself, it is generally not recommended. Professional installation is strongly advised, especially for automated or large driveway gates. Gates can be extremely heavy, sometimes weighing hundreds of pounds, which makes them bulky and dangerous to maneuver into place. Proper installation requires perfect positioning and balancing to ensure the gate swings smoothly and functions as intended. For automated gates, the wiring is also hazardous and typically requires a licensed electrician. Mistakes during a DIY installation can be costly, as materials alone can average around $1,000. Given the safety risks and the difficulty of achieving a proper setup, it is best to hire a professional gate installer.

Your gate should be 3/4 to an inch smaller than the opening. The opening size that you need for your gate can vary depending on your hinge type. You may also need to add reinforcing braces if the gap between your gate and the fence is not uniform from top to bottom.
