"There were no problems other than some delays getting started and during the work at least in part due to rain. They laid a new foundation for the bricks, rebuilt the wall under the window and painted it. In a separate project they removed the old side walk and laid a wider new one. They reseeded the grass along the walk that had been disturbed and cleaned up after themselves. Overall pleased with the work and would hire again."

An inward swing also prevents the gate from opening into a public space, like a sidewalk, and can be more convenient when carrying heavy items like a wheelbarrow into a garden.

There are exceptions, however. The layout of your property may require a different approach. For example, if your property is on a slope, the gate may not be able to swing inward. You should also ensure the gate can open fully without colliding with any objects or blocking access to other areas. For a backyard garden gate where public access isn't a concern, the direction it swings is largely a matter of personal preference. Finally, always check your local building codes, as they may have specific requirements for which way a gate must swing.

Whether you can attach a wood extension to a vinyl gate depends on the gate's construction. Some vinyl gates are sturdy enough to allow wood or vinyl boards to be attached. Many, however, have hollow frames that may not hold screws or heavy extensions securely. For these, consider alternative extension options such as a rubber flap or chicken wire.

Assuming the site is prepped and you have all the tools and materials ready, you should budget the better part of a day to build a driveway gate. This can depend on your DIY experience and which materials you’ve chosen, such as building from scratch or using a prefabricated option. The gate size and finishing touches, like painting or staining, can also add to the overall time budget.
