Dan and Danielle Randolph were able to see the vision that we had for our home and they gave creative input that made for a very unique set of custom cabinets! They operate with the utmost attention to detail--we are so pleased with the work they've done for us! Not only did they build the cabinets that we wanted, they also took on some "unfinished" projects that we needed for our new home--fixing a set of antique corbels that we wanted to use on our covered back porch, they also converted an antique fireplace mantel into a beautiful built-in book case that is in the center of our home. Two of the biggest mistakes with drywalling are not measuring (and therefore buying the wrong amount of drywall) and trying to install drywall yourself. In many cases, installing new drywall will boost your home value. Replacing old, damaged, cracked, or wavy drywall is a great way to improve the look and feel of your home, as new drywall installed by a professional shouldn’t have any imperfections. Additionally, removing old drywall means you’ll have open walls, so you can install new insulation and address exposed issues with plumbing and electrical systems running behind the walls. All of these fixes will also add to your home’s value.

The two most common types of drywall are ½-inch and ⅝-inch thick white or gray drywall. Most walls are ⅝-inch thick because the drywall is slightly more resistant to damage and it helps dampen sound considerably. It’s also much heavier, which is why most ceilings are ½-inch thick. There are special use cases where you want to use ⅝-inch thick drywall for ceilings, such as between a garage and living space, and the ceiling above a finished basement.

Generally, shower walls should not be installed over drywall because of the moisture issues this can cause. If you’re using a direct-to-stud shower kit, you need to remove the drywall before you can do the installation.

However, if you’re using a glue-up shower kit or stall, you can glue the shower walls directly to drywall. Be sure to install a moisture-resistant drywall or waterproof cement board.

You’ll get better results if you soundproof the whole wall. A hole through which light can pass can also let sound waves in. Acoustical or silicone sealant applied to holes and cracks can block enough sound to make a difference. However, the more layers absorb vibrations and slow or stop sound waves, the less noise you’ll have.
