I am a Journeyman Union Carpenter by trade but after 15 years left it to pursue other things. I have had rental properties and done hundreds of property rehabs and remodels over the years. I have a working knowledge of plumbing and electrical and I take pride in my work. I also rehab and refinish antique wood furniture and build custom furniture out of old wood and recycled materials. No job is too small and I enjoy meeting all the people that this kind of work leads me too.

Fire Sprinkler Companies questions, answered by experts

Sprinkler systems are usually worth the investment, not only because they appeal to buyers when you sell your home but also because they help keep your lawn looking beautiful, which can increase curb appeal. In fact, you can expect a return on investment for a sprinkler system to sit between 80% and 90%, making it a better home improvement project than most in terms of value. It’s crucial to hire a sprinkler system professional for installation to ensure maximum value, as that will confirm for buyers that the system will likely last for years without issues.

If you’re unsure whether you need a sprinkler system, consider the size of your yard and how much time you have to maintain the grass. Inconsistent watering can cause grass to grow at different rates, leading to an unhealthy-looking lawn that can’t choke out weeds. Larger yards also take more work to water manually. Having a sprinkler system can solve both of these issues at once.

You might, depending on where you live. Backflow preventers ensure that water only flows in a single direction so that the dirty water from your home and irrigation system doesn’t contaminate your fresh water supply. Many municipalities require you to have a backflow preventer if you have a sprinkler system. But even if you don’t legally need one, installing a backflow preventer can give you peace of mind that your dirty water isn’t mixing with your clean water supply.

Different irrigation systems have different controllers and technology levels, so costs vary widely. However, for most homeowners, the replacement sprinkler controller will cost between $30 and $150. (If you hire a professional to help you install it, you will likely pay an additional charge for their labor.)

Many sprinkler heads have a small screw on top, often called a radius adjustment screw, that is designed to adjust the length of the stream coming from the nozzle. Insert a screwdriver or hex key that fits the screw opening and twist it clockwise to lengthen how far the stream sprays, or twist it counterclockwise to shorten the stream length.
