"I highly recommend Dana King Next Project Studio for your home renovation needs. We were planning a rather large renovation including a complete gut of our kitchen and guest bath, as well as refreshing the family room and main hallway. It was important that we had a designer/contractor who would oversee the entire project. We had used Dana King in 2015 to refresh our foyer, living room and dining room and we were impressed with how smoothly the project went, so we hired them again in late 2022. We met with Dana to go over the scope of the project. Dana then gave us estimated costs and timelines. Dana’s group handled every step of the project. The project was overseen by our project manager, Drew Chapman. They made sure all the proper permits were in place before the project began. Our designer, Meg Blais, was in contact with us nearly every day for design selections. The carpenters, Nick Duncan and Greg Piper, made sure the project stayed on schedule, overseeing plumbers, flooring installers, electricians, insulators, fireplace installers, and painters. Meg made sure our appliances, flooring, cabinets, fixtures, paint, and backsplashes were all ordered on time to keep the project on track. Our biggest design issues were with the kitchen location. From the front door, you had to either walk down the hall through the family room into the kitchen, or else go through the dining room. I am not a fan of open concept, so I needed ideas on how to make the kitchen more accessible without tearing down walls. I was also concerned that the main narrow hallway was so dark. Meg came up with the great idea of adding a doorway from the kitchen to the hallway. This provided immediate access to the kitchen from the main hallway, as well as providing extra light to the hallway. She also increased the opening from the dining room to the kitchen and moved the refrigerator to a more accessible location. Even though the doorway in the kitchen meant losing cabinet space, Meg’s design gave us more storage than we had in the old kitchen. The entire process took three months, but the project manager and carpenters kept us informed every single day what had been completed and what was happening the next day, so we were never left wondering what was next with our project. Because Dana King Next Project Studio handles every aspect of a remodel, you don’t have to worry about permits, inspections, which trades people will be showing up each day. Everything was so smooth, and the people assigned to our project were the nicest, kindest, and most professional I’ve ever worked with. I had no problem with having them in our home every day. Our dog loved everyone; it was tough to keep him out from underfoot. Just the best company I’ve ever worked with, and we will definitely use them again when it's time to update our master bed and bath."

"It went extremely well. It had been so bad before. We almost went with concrete but for just a little bit more we were able to get pavers. We are so pleased with the results. The crew worked incredibly hard and it looks fantastic. A major upgrade for us."

"I referred to Angie's list for companies to get a bid on an irrigation system and possibly some landscape lighting.  I spoke to a woman on the phone last week who seemed professional and pleasant.  She said someone would give me a call back about setting a time to come out for the bid.  I gave her both a cell phone and home phone number and never received a call back.  The company has several good reviews on Angie's List and has a nice website so they were at the top of my list to call.  I've called 4 other companies and all called back the same day to set up a time to come out.  Since I have 4 other companies to choose from I will not bother calling Allen back.

Update:  Received a phone call & message from Steve Allen over the weekend on my cell phone, over a week after I originally called the company.  I was planning on calling him back to let him know we decided to go with another company but he beat me to the callback and called and left another message a few days later at my home number.  He did apologize for not getting back to me sooner but said this is their busiest time of the year and he personally does the bidding and gives a detailed layout/plan on-site for each of his possible customers.  He offered to come out to give a bid on the irrigation system but we have already decided to go with another company who also gave me a detailed on-site plan, bid, and spent over an hour discussing the potentials for the project (lighting, irrigation, landscape).  Based on the reviews here Allen obviously does quality work so I would imagine most people would be happy using them.  For one reason or another my number was lost in the shuffle of the season so I am writing this review as a courtesy to them so hopefully this doesn't happen to another potential customer."

Lighting questions, answered by experts

No, you should not leave LED Christmas lights up all year. While the LED lights themselves are very durable, their wiring and casings can be as vulnerable as any Christmas lights. They’re subject to drying out, experiencing cold or sun damage that causes them to crack, and even damage caused by gnawing pests. (The same is true of incandescents.) If you want your lights to last the years that they’re rated for, bring them inside after Christmas is over.

Between seasons, inspect cords for damage, replace burnt-out bulbs, and clean lighting fixtures to prevent dirt buildup. Proper storage in cool, dry conditions will extend the lights' lifespan and minimize repairs or replacements when redeployed.

Your maintenance needs revolve around the type of foundation you choose, as well as how you furnish or decorate it. Patios require little else other than the occasional hose-down, but decks and other wooden structures will require annual power washing and sealing. You may also need to restain the wood every two to three years.

Adding a solid roof rather than building a pergola or leaving the space open will make maintenance much easier. Without a roof, you will need to spend more time sweeping, washing, and covering your furniture to protect it from UV bleaching.

Yes, most services include testing the system after repairs. Confirm with your provider.

If your lights are shorting out during rain storms or other winter events, you should probably replace them. These shorts indicate electrical issues that could cause serious hazards. Look for outdoor-rated lights with connectors made for rainy conditions to replace them. But if your Christmas lights are new and you want further protection, you can find weatherproof covers to add to the male-end connectors of your Christmas light strings. These can minimize the risk of shorts.
