Some homeowners and professionals refer to skim coating as plastering, even though the material spread over the wall is totally different.

In most cases, plaster repair will improve your home’s energy efficiency because a solid barrier of the insulative material helps keep conditioned air inside your home. Major plaster repair jobs like repairing large cracks or crumbling sections of plaster or applying a skim coat might make a noticeable difference in your heating and cooling bills. Not only can plaster repairs improve efficiency, but they can also reduce strain on your HVAC equipment, potentially saving you money on maintenance and repairs.

If the water damage is small, such as small patches, you can paint over the area. To prevent mold growth, roll on a coat of an antifungal primer beforehand painting. However, if the damage is more extensive, you may have mold, and the plaster will be compromised. You’ll have to replace the plasterboard.

If the holes in the plaster are small, you can fill them with layers of patching plaster until they’re filled. After it dries, you can sand the plaster and paint over it. If the hole is much larger, consider using bonding plaster first and then a layer of patching plaster, completing the process with sanding and a layer of paint.
